View Full Version : Air Magic without Incense

I was wondering, how can I do air magick or have a representation of air on my altar without using incense? I really hate strong perfumy smells so I don't want to use incense, or oils either. I currently have a feather in the east of my altar, but it's small and really doesn't evoke air for me. My idea of air is strong breezes and cool gusts of wind, but it's hard to bring them into my room. :D
Any suggestions on what I can do?

a chinese folding fan? Or to really get some breezes gong, how about an electric one? Or one of those little battery powered ones?

Feathers are a great representative of the Air Element, Many people use feathers, instead of incense :) The Wand is actually an Air representation to some people as well, though some associate it with Fire. I suppose that one is a matter of interpretation :)

Some other symbols for air are kites, birds, flutes, paper airplanes, balloons and windsocks. You could use a photograph in which you can "see" the wind. Like a picture from a hurricane or tornado.
I have seen the heart with wings attached used to symbolize air. I personally, have a wind chime hanging over that area of my altar because incense screws with my sinuses (even natural) and my cat kept stealing the feather. I use a windchimes with owls on it because they are birds and also say "air" to me.
I wouldn't suggest anything that actually blows because it will mess with your candles. ;)

yeh, I someimes use my pipe whistle to evoke air, and maybe play a tune on it or something. :)

...or rather than a single feather, how 'bout a feather fan (like a smudge or sage fan)? I have a sage fan made from blue & gold macaw tail feathers, & another made from peahen (female peacock) feathers... they are both pleasing to the eye, & very effective fans... although I didn't make them, they are pretty easy to make (well, if you're 'artsy-craftsy' 8O )...

Hey, thanks for all the great ideas, everyone!
My sister has a gorgeous hand painted silk fan, which I would love to use - though I don't know what I'd have to do to persuade her to give that to me, lol.

Ooo..yeah..i think windchimes would be a lovely thing to add..we used to have windchimes hanging above my altar, but I moved them to hang my censer.
I think that a bell is also an air representation.correct me if I'm wrong??

Pheonixsong, I just saw something and it made me think of you. I was at my grocery store (of all places) and they had a display of Homedics and Enviroscape (sp? Looks wrong!) One thing that they had was a little windchime hanging on a bar that was attached to the base. In the base was a hidden fan that blows on the windchimes and makes them chime. That would be perfect for someone's altar! I would really love to have one but I am not sure I can afford it. It was only 20 dollars though. :D I'm just poor :(

That sounds lovely :). I'll have to keep an eye out for something like that - though I have no idea what 'Homedics and Enviroscape' are. lol

Well, I can't believe it but Amazon.com has it. Here is a link so you can see what they look like:

Ooh, I have never done that before. I hope it works. :)

It looks gorgeous! I never knew Amazon sold things like that. I thought they were just books/games/dvds/videos. Or maybe I'm thinking of Amazon.co.uk.
