This question has been annoying me for a while and I'm hoping some can answer it.
Who is Satan? Is he a Christian creation? A metaphor? A pre-Christian mythological figure? Who is he?

Satan originates in the Old Testament, through Jewish lore, in one specific book he stars in one of the major roles: Book of Job.
There, he is simply one of the higher ranking Angels of God and he receives the duty of testing God's people's (the Jews) faith in God through bringing disasters on them and then tempting them to stray away from God's way.
Job proves to be a rightous man through Satan's tests because he goes through all these disasters and personal tragedies yet never stops having faith in God and he is still a devout Jew.
So Satan originates in the Jewish Bible as another Angel in God's army of Angels. He simply has sort of a dirty job to do, but it is a very important one to God and is assigned by God himself.
So Satan is not against God or an enemy of God at this point.
Then comes Christianity and turns Satan into the bad guy.

as Morr said, he is pre-christian. personally, i believe he is pre-jewish as well. and also like Morr said, he is/was an agent of God, an arch angel, and in other terms, he set at the left hand side of God and served as his punisher, tempter, and judge of the wicked.
in all honesty, his first appearance in the holy bible was that of the serpent. although the serpent wasnt refered to as Satan in genisis, if a person puts two and two together and understanding that Satan is God's tempter, they would know it was him. and of course, mankind failed.
the only deity Satan will bow to is the God of the christians and jews, the creator. literature written about Satan over the last several centuries depicts him as all evil and the cause of all evil which in my opinion, is a cop out or an excuse to get away with malevolent behaviour as we are all capable of "evil acts" and its out choices that makes the difference. Satan's job is plain and simple. to test God's followers and all mankind to see who is loyal to God in the end. the new testaments topics on Satan about being "a stumbleing block" and "i cast you out", "be gone from me Satan" stuff is nothing more that Jesus' way of teaching others how to flee from evil and how to not give into temptation which which is placed before everyone.
is Satan a "bad" or "evil" guy? NO. hes just doing his job.

Satan the character is an old fairy-tale.
But that character, in all his guises, is a metaphor for life. He is human-nature. He is the truth of man.

Satan is a Latin word for enemy or my enemy. It that respect their is a Satan in all humans. There are more specific names for for fallen or evil beings.
On a side note the ancient Jews made blood sacrifices to god and Satan on their supplication holidays.

Pretty sure.
Here's the Wikipedia article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Satan:
Satan, from the Hebrew word for "adversary
This site 'A Jewish View of Satan' (http://www.geocities.com/~Alyza/Jewish/satan.html)also states it:
First of all, the Hebrew word satan (sin-tet-nun sofit) means an adversary or accuser.
Sorry, to use just internet articles, but I don't have any Hebrew dictionary's and I don't speak it, but I'm 99.9% sure it's a Hebrew word.
Perhaps if Morr see's this post, she could say more, as she can speak it.

Satan the character is an old fairy-tale.
He is the truth of man.
While that is certainly true, the totality of man is merely the beginning.
There are other things than man.
