View Full Version : Any personal experiences in using herbs to bring on your period?

Not for abortion- just to bring on a period. My tubes are tied and my periods tend to be irregular. I am going on vacation at the end of next week. I tend to bleed really heavy and it would just be a royal pain to have it then. I am sort of due to get it right around the time we go. I was hoping to take sometime to just give it a gentle nudge to come a few days earlier.
Some of what I have read about was dandelion root, burdock root, chaste tree berries. I have no experience in using these. And of course, I don't want it to backfire and get my period so miserable I am unable to pack!
I know pennyroyal oil should also work, but that is supposed to be pretty strong.
Thanks, Chris

Too much can kill!
I would never take the concentrated oil internally. It would be far to easy to overdose.
I have, however, made a tea of the dried herb with no ill effects.
I've also had some success with "wishing" it earlier when (like you) I was trying to accomodate a vacation. (Energy focused towards a goal...) Usually I start a month or two ahead of time, and decide what phase of the moon I want to bleed in... I can usually get it to work.
Frankly, the pennyroyal I've only used when I was late & nervous.
Anyone else?

I've used Raspberry Leaf Tea to bring on periods...works pretty well :) And it's far more mild than Pennyroyal.

Yes let me tell you how powerful this stuff is.
I dug up this thread because I've missed three periods (stress is a killer!) I decided to go the herbal store today to get some.
Apparently after all this time, all I had to do was threaten my body with Raspberry leaf. The morning I was supposed to go, guess waht *I* woke up to . I got some anyway in case it happens again :)

Raspberry leaves are great regulators for women. You can also try others in the Rubus family but raspberry leaves are the best.

What about excessive periods?
I'm on the Pill (have been for about 15 years) and am 41. Got my period on schedule the 3rd Wed. of June. We went on vacation the following week. LOTS of exercise, sports, dancing (I'm a sit-at-the-PC person, unfortunately). That Wed. -- gush. Clots, cramps and everything. Figured it was the unusual exercise. Today -- gush. Clots, cramps and everything. So I called my GYN. They are upping my Pill dosage (been on the same low dose all these years). they say they get concerned if you go through a tampon every half-hour, and I'm nowhere near that.
Yuck. I remember my mom haveing D&C after D&C when she was a bit older than this. My Dr. says they don't do that anymore -- they try pills first, and D&C as a last resort.
So, is there an herb or combination of herbs that will stop this and won't interfere with the Pill? I say the latter because when I went off it both times to get pregnant, I discovered I was fertile like a bunny. And 41 is too old and hazardous to have a baby, for me and the baby, you know?
Thanks.

Y'know, I started experiencing the same thing after being on the Pill for just a year... things just gradually keep getting heavier and more painful.. last month, I decided "Screw it, these things are messing me up more than they're helping." What's the point in being on the Pill if I'm too miserable with it to even look at the BF? Now that I'm off, things are better than they were when I started (except for the 40+ lbs they added).
Anyway, on the other end of the spectrum, I've never used herbs to bring on a period before it was due, but I've had to use them to coerce a period in case of emergency. Anytime it's a couple weeks late (which isn't normal for me), I blast my system with Dong Quai. 4 in the morning and 4 more in the afternoon brings on the most stubborn periods, and leaves a horrible taste in your mouth anytime you burp.
Maybe I'll try the raspberry next time... it can't taste nearly as horrible as those dong quai caplets.

Never tried dong quai, but yes, the raspberry tea is yummy!

It's enough to keep me gagging for the rest of the day.
By the way, I'm not saying that the dong quai is the best method. In fact, it usually leaves one giddy and disoriented for an hour or so after taking them. But, the couple times I did it, it was better than the possible alternative. We have enough trouble keeping ourselves fed sometimes.
Seeing as how I'm off the Pill, and my system's torturing me as it tries to get back to normal, I think I'll be paying my parents a visit and raiding my old raspberry plants for their leaves...

Well, I myself have posted nearly a book on cramps, so I'm going to respectfully direct you to the "stuck" thread titled, "Green Room Resource Center", where you will find a link to "PMS/Other Women's Issues".
Not because I don't want to take the time to answer you, but because there's too much information there you should see. :)
Feel free to add to the discussions, but certainly check out that thread if you're one of the majority of women who have problems with cramps!

sorry about the above. Hit the wrong key...
I don't have much experience with herbs to bring on periods, but I have found that Vitamin E really helps to regulate the flow. I usually take 800 - 1000 IU one or two days a month and it seems to work pretty well.

I do apologize if this thread is old, but I found the thread again when I did a google search for herbs to bring on a period

I experienced 20 years of cramps so bad they put me in bed... until I read an herbal book.. The cure for menstrual cramps is as close as your vitamin cabinet. As the mother of 6 daughters (5 who menstruate), they have ALL used this with great success.. One daughter's best friend got cramps so bad she threw up. every month. One day, she came over to take my kids to school (before they were old enough to drive) and she complained of these cramps.. 20 minutes later, at school she turned to my daughter and said " your mom is the bomb: my cramps are GONE!"
The cure? Calcium 600 mg pill once or twice a day the first 2 days of your period. (Spring Valley brand from walmart is inexpensive and readily absorbed)
The calcium works because in the last days leading up to your period, your body becomes depleted of calcium. I take the calcium pill the morning I'm to start (and for a day after) and haven't had a cramp in 8 years

Never herbs, but if I want to bring it on I massage diluted clary sage oil into my tummy and my upper thighs.
