A few weeks ago I posted about wanting to get a few dwarf hamsters from the shelter. After much research, I decided that dwarfs are just not for me, but I fell in love with the idea of a Syrian. So I went out in search of one, sort of. I didn't want to buy from a pet store, because I figure that enough people have hammys that they need to rehome for some reason or another, that I just wanted to adopt. Anyways, to make a long story short, I found an ad on craigslist for a male syrian long haired hamster. So today I went out and picked him up. He is super cuddly and tame. I just got his cage put together, and he's in there right now because it was hot in the car, and I want him to drink plenty of water. He's so freaking cute! I'll post pictures shortly, next time I take him out to play. His old name was Alloy, but I want to change it, its not my type of name. So I need suggestions. He's either a golden banded, or a golden dominant spot, I can't tell right now, I'll get a better look at his markings shortly. I'm excited! He's pretty much my first hamster!

Hey hamsters are cool animals! Congratulations on your new cutie! (Cause all hamsters are cute!) May he have a long life, and lots of tubes to frolic in, and may his wheel not be too squeaky

darn, one of the pics didn't upload right... oh well, I'll fix it later... He is such a cutey! Any ideas for names? I'm clueless... My sister suggested Romeo because he's a charmer, but I just don't like the name, and try to avoid shakespeare names, because thats my sister's thing. I'm thinking of naming him after a TV character, but I still can't think of a name that I like that suits him...

My sister suggested Charlie, Archie, and Butterscotch. I see Charlie as more of a girl name though, i'm weird. And I don't want to name him after food. Archie doesn't suit him... I am so picky right now, lol. Anyways, I'm about to leave to take my foster kittens to adoptions, while I'm at the pet store, I need to pick up some supplies for this guy. He is so incredibly tame, its amazing... I can turn him over on his back and kiss his belly without him fighting or anything! My sister didn't know about the cheek pockets, so I gave him a rotini noodle (those twisty ones), and he shoved the whole thing in there, my sister thought he swallowed it whole, lol.

Copal. Like the incense, the tree.
It was a sacred incense used by the peoples of Mesoamerica. Both the Aztecs and Mayans use it along wit other Native peoples of central and South America.
Copal smudging cleanses and purifies a person and their surroundings.
Copal...(rhymes with opal)
I like the name Copal...can you tell?

Be careful. Sometimes they can get something stuck in their cheeks. If one of his eyes shuts(And he won't open it), that can be a sign that something is stuck. You'll have to feel around on the outside and try to push it out.

thanks for the info. I don't give him too much at a time, and I only do it right before I'm going to put him away, so he can hide the food where he wants it right away. He takes all of his food out of his dish, and moves it somewhere in the cage. It bugs me! I know that hamsters do this, but I read that since hamsters are tidy critters, if they are provided with a food dish, they are more likely to keep the food in that designated spot. I'm thinking of moving the food out of his stash and back into the dish, or moving the dish where his stash is, so he knows that thats where it goes.

You never know with these guys, My cousin has one. She had the cheek problem and it turned out, she had a piece of bedding stuck in her cheek
might work.
