Um, mine's really long. Don't worry copyright police, this is an annotated bibliography entry. I wrote it. :D

Motley, Warren. “From Patriarchy to Matriarchy: Ma Joad’s Role in The Grapes of Wrath.” American Literature.

In this article, Motley attempts to show how the anthropological theories of Robert Briffault directly influenced Steinbeck to transform the Joad family from a patriarchy to a matriarchy because, “under the economic conditions of the migration, survival depends on the collective security of matriarchal society rather than on patriarchal self-reliance.”

Motley begins with a thorough description of the social theories of the time. He discusses Briffault’s book, The Mothers in depth and links it to the theories of Charles Darwin and Karl Marx and to the writings of Jan Smut and Jan Elif Boodin. Eventually he uses those theories to show how a patriarchy cannot work for the migrants of The Grapes of Wrath because patriarchy relies on the success of the individual whereas matriarchy relies on the women’s ability to work for the good of everyone.

The most prominent example of this transition is the “tribal” council the men hold to make decisions. They squat in the dirt in a closed circle with the women looking on as if in a “gallery.” Eventually that council disintegrates as its members die off and lose effectiveness. The women, standing on the outside of the circle, now become the circle. Grampa is replaced by Ma as the leader and she asserts that right in an armed confrontation with her male counterpart.

Where the article fails, is in its length. Motley attempts to clarify the theories that motivated Steinbeck to write this story and show how these theories played out in The Grapes of Wrath. He spends sufficient time explaining the theories and plenty of time undermining the position of the men. Unfortunately he spends so much time on the men, Ma Joad’s role becomes almost an afterthought. It is possible the article would have been much more effective if he had included Rose of Sharon and her relationship with Ma Joad as part of his argument.

This article was published at a time when feminist theory began to move out of pure theory and into real application. However, it is useful to anyone studying John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath, feminism, and matriarchy. While Briffault’s theories were groundbreaking in Steinbeck’s time, they are now considered by some scholars to be defunct. That does not however, belittle their importance in studying The Grapes of Wrath since Steinbeck was exposed to them and apparently greatly influenced by them.

The endogenous cannabinoid system
By using powerful new tools such as selective antagonists and knockout mice, the functions of the endogenous cannabinoid system are now being described. These functions potentially include the modulation of mood, memory, cognition, perception, movement, coordination, sleep, thermoregulation, cardiovascular tone, appetite, and immune response (1, 5). The cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 belong to the G-protein coupled superfamily of receptors (see box in “Molecular modeling of opioid analgesics” article). Receptor stimulation activates intracellular G proteins in the first step in the signal transduction pathway, leading to potassium channel activation, calcium channel inhibition, or cyclic AMP inhibition, thereby modulating cyclic AMP–mediated release of peptide and amine messengers. The end result of cannabinoid receptor stimulation depends on other events in the milieu as well as the presence of other molecules competing for receptor binding sites (1).

The two major endogenous ligands identified to date are arachidonoyl ethanolamide (anandamide) and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG). As their chemical names suggest, both are derived from arachidonic acid, which is also the precursor for the prostaglandins. 2-AG is capable of binding to and activating both receptor types, whereas anandamide only activates the CB1 receptor (5). As a neurotransmitter, anandamide has some unusual characteristics. According to Cecilia J. Hillard, a neuropharmacologist at the Medical College of Wisconsin, anandamide appears to be released from the postsynaptic nerve terminal and to “swim back” across the synapse to the receptor on the presynaptic terminal in a two-cell feedback system.

The CB1 receptor is presumed to mediate all the CNS effects of the cannabinoids. “The distribution of these receptors and the signal transduction systems they activate make a lot of sense in terms of what we know about the physiology of these compounds,” said Steven R. Childers, a contributor to the IOM report and a professor of physiology and pharmacology at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. For example, there are very high levels of receptors in the hippocampus involved in memory, and in the cerebellum and basal ganglia mediating the motor effects of cannabinoids.

Oooops!Damn whacked out nerds! Hehehehe

Peace,
Twig

Once again, you asked for it...lol At least this one isn't about irritable bowel syndrome.

Rodriguez expresses the theme of humiliation more subtly than Kingston. He internalizes his embarrassment of his parents’ broken English, leading the nuns of his school to believe that he “…seems so timid and shy” (Rodriguez 569). He feels the humiliation of his parents so strongly, that he becomes angry and resolves to learn English, in order to avoid the humiliation that not being able to speak English brings. He has to establish his public identity, and the only way to do this is to learn English. While he grieves for the loss of Spanish in his house, “One Saturday morning I entered the kitchen where my parents were talking, but I did not realize that they were talking in Spanish until, the moment they saw me, their voices changed and they began speaking English. The gringo sounds they uttered startled me. Pushed me away. In that moment of trivial misunderstanding and profound insight, I felt my throat twisted by unsounded grief” (Rodriguez 570), he still manages to look beyond his grief and develop his public identity. As Rodriguez becomes more Americanized, his parents also grow more comfortable with their own public identity: “Following the dramatic Americanization of their children, even my parents grew more publicly confident – especially my mother” (Rodriguez 571).

Wyvern
Fire and Water
Astrologically associated with Aries and the First House
Wyvern types are courageous, idealistic, and passionately concerned with personal rights and justice for the individual. They are among the most outgoing of all the types, highly sociable both at work and at play. They are tirelessly active with respect to other people and are rarely alone. They have a strong moral and ethical sense that makes them fiercely loyal and protective of those they love. They are implacable champions of the underdog and are strongly motivated to help others help themselves. They make good leaders of the democratic variety. They are drawn to competitive activities and group activities. They are exuberant, larger-than-life characters who are guaranteed to get things moving and make events fun, although quieter types may find them overpowering.

Okay..i have to say this...

I think the whole idea of competing for threads, and visitors to differen't forums on this site is absolutely rediculous.

People who are interested in Sillyness, will go to just silly. People who want to introduce themselves, or post general topics like movies, what's going on in their lives, etc, should go to just talk. People who want to talk about magick, to M & R, Music, to music..etc.

That's why we HAVE so many differen't forums. Because people will naturally go to whichever suits their interest at the time.

Competing for visitors to your forum??? I don't get it.

**clicks control V**

June 23, 2002 (because it’s 12:49 a.m.) ~

Sing-Sing’s was such a cool place! Now I know what a dueling piano bar is. I drank a Sex on the Beach (which I’d always wanted to try anyway), but I didn’t want anything more than that all evening. **grins** What can I say? I’m stubborn. Eventually, I will probably get drunk just once (in the privacy of the home) to see what exactly it is, but when visiting friends I’d never met before, out-of-state, in a public place, and knowing that I have to go home to face my parents…. It was safer for me to just stick with one drink.

So I drank my drink and hollered and screamed and sang along with the music (along with everyone else). Got nearly deafened by the music (I could hardly hear for 15 minutes after we’d left), but it was a LOT of fun. Afterward, we went to IHOP. I haven’t been there in about 15 years. This was fun, too. I’ve never eaten so late at night (early in the morning).

And now, here it is, nearly 1 in the morning here, and it’s 3 back home. I haven’t stayed up this late (as far as my internal clock is concerned) in ages.

Tomorrow, we’re going to Boulder, and we’re going to visit Pearl Street, whatever that is. This is shaping up to be an interesting eight more days. It’s going to take me a bit to get adjusted to being here.

The Internet produces the oddest situations. You feel like you know someone, and think of how comfortable you’d be around them. And then you meet them and there’s this whole awkwardness to overcome. In a sense, I’m getting to know all of them for the first time (at least as far as this lifetime is concerned), but I feel fortunate that I do feel comfortable around them, despite my quirkiness. (It helps that I’ve seen plenty of pictures and heard them all on the phone.) I should stop this entry because I keep falling asleep for a split second while writing it. B*B! Senebty!

June 23, 2002 ~

I woke up first thing this morning to the bright sunshine, because this room is east-facing, same as at home. I took my shower, dried my hair, and then I decided to clean dishes. Then we all went to Katy’s grandparents’ house until lunchtime. We then went on to Pearl Street in Boulder, where we ate lunch (had to wait forever because the waitress dropped our food and it all had to be remade), shopped in a bunch of very cool stores (mostly New Age and metaphysical, or else candle shops), and had Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Katy began to get a migraine, so we came back to the house.

While Katy rested to get rid of her headache, ‘Thena and I drove to Garden of the Gods. (And I remembered to take my camera with me this time!) The whole drive, as well as the Garden itself, was spectacular. I tool a bunch of pictures of it. **smiles** (See the first 14 photos….)

Today was a much better day, in that I wasn’t exhausted and in total shock. I love the sheer beauty of this place. And it’s so BIG….. and orderly. And gorgeous. I saw horses, cows, llamas, a bunny, and a deer today. (And a prairie dog yesterday.) It was 94 degrees outside and I swear it felt like 78 degrees or so. And dry. I like the “Dry” part. I think Katy has work tomorrow, and ‘Thena already said that she does. So, I’m thinking that the Evil Twin and I are going to be here at the house for a veg day. Don’t know for sure.

‘Thena and I ate at IHOP for dinner. Yep… my second time eating at IHOP that day… and wouldn’t you know it? The waitress never wrote down the order, so we were again (for the second time that day) waiting and waiting. Dessert was free, though. Pity neither of us took the waitress up on that offer. (Also, I never had biscuits and gravy before. It was very tasty. **smiles**) While we were eating our dinner, ‘Thena told me that Sing-Sing messed up last night on “Love Shack” by the B-52s. She said they were supposed to say Happy Birthday to me. **grins** It’s the thought that counts, anyway. And actually, I liked that song the best of all that evening anyway (so they picked a good song for me).

Oh. Don and I finally WBPA’d (Wonder Bread Powers Activate…. It’s a long story) today. We were waiting for our food at lunch and ‘Thena picked up her fork and knife to pantomime pounding the table. Katy laughed and said, “Oliver Twist!” Don and I both started saying (at the same time, hence the WBPA-ness) “Please, sir. May I have some more?” Too funny.

And now, hopefully, I’ll sleep better tonight. B*B!

**grins** Ah. My journal entries for how I spent my summer vacation. I was in the middle of adding text and photos to my DevArt site so that I'll be able to show you all the fun stuff I did on that trip. http://www.deviantart.com/packs/details.php?id=3904 ~ I'm not done yet, but I've got some stuff up there for anyone who wants to see.

Spiral Tarot

Surrounded by what looks like a field of pomegranites or an apple orchard, the Lovers embrace. The male looks at the female, while she looks up at the spirit in the sky above the two. On the Lovers' arms are 2 symbols- the male has the symbol for the sun and the female has a silver crescent moon (which I think makes them represent the God & Goddess. :))

From this card, I feel more power than in the other decks I have, mostly because of the representation of the sun & moon symbols. I think, if this card turned up in more of my readings than it does ( ) that it would symbolize the relationships that I have at hand a blessing, and that there is "smooth sailing" ahead. :)

Dragon Tarot

:) I love how the Lovers are depicted in the Dragon Tarot (it's one of my fave cards in that deck.;) )
The male (I think) bluish dragon seems to be the dominant of the two, as he flies higher up than the pink one. He could also be protecting her from anything that would threaten their relationship. She (the pink dragon) seems to be embracing the blue, letting her feelings toward him known. She is not afraid of what others will think of her.

Tarot Classic

The design on this card is very simplistic. There are 2 women standing on either side of the man - one light haired, the other dark haired. I think the darker haired one could be the male's mother, or a suitor that he doesn't want, as the cupid in the air above the 3 is pointing his arrow at the light haired woman.

Weitzman’s job coincides with her spiritual mission, one of reaching out to make a difference in the lives of a few people who, in turn, reach out to others.
“I saw Luz unify people and in the end bring all those together into a single voice that was heard,” Weitzman said.
In developing community leaders, Weitzman developed in herself the skills that she said have paved the way for her work with the Jewish Organizing Initiative.
“The program trains young Jewish adults to work as grass-roots community organizers for social justice, much like what I’m doing here,” Weitzman said.
She said she will be not only be acting as a mentor to the next generation of young Jewish leaders, but will also be building her own community.
“This is work that is emotional, spiritual and personal. It’s something where you have to bring all your resources to bear to be in that position of being able to mentor people,” Weitzman said.
The job will require a move with her two daughters, Sophie, 6 and Olivia, 8, to the Boston area.

"Tima! Put us down, put us down now!" Lachlan shouted as the seer went limp in his arms. He cursed under his breath for his forgetfullness, hands moving in the shadows to wrap around her neck and the magicked collar that was quickly cutting off the life of their only hope.

The dragon landed heavily, and Lachlan slid from her back, Tima helping him lay the seer upon the ground. "Fars powder in a circle Tima, quickly!" He ordered and the young girl leapt to her feet, hand already in a pouch at her waist and then purple dust flowed to the ground as Lachlan wrapped his hands around the seers' throat and began to chant.

Tima's eyes glowed, and a hand strayed to the weapon in her belt as she watched the torches of search parties begin to swarm from the temples, the alarm bells pealing madly, and lights in the nearby city began to show in darkened windows.

The punch of power almost flattened her, and the dragon growled in response as the collar shattered under Lachlan's hands. She turned back around. He was slumped over the seer, hands hanging limply at his sides, and with a gesture of her hand, Tima dispersed the circle surrounding them.

"Da, can you get on the dragon? We've got to move. I just need you to hold on." He lifted his head with effort and stared at her for a moment with heavy lids, then somewhere found the strength to lift the seer and get to his feet. The dragon growled again, a different pitch and directed at Tima, who understood and fell to the ground as a gout of flame flashed above her head.

Four priests went up in smoke and flame, and Lachlan managed to boost the seer onto the dragon and drag himself up behind her. Tima jumped onto the dragon's neck and with a mighty heave the beast leapt into the night sky.

*laughs* Didn't realize it was so long.....part of a story I'm working on over in the P&L section, and I'd copied it over to Word to do some editing on.

Exercises - Lesson 11
Interpreting a Single Card
(See Introduction to Exercises.)
Exercise 11.1 - Your Personal Reactions to a Card
Choose any card from the tarot deck. Look at it carefully and then write down your response. It doesn't matter if you are already familiar with this card and know its meanings. Consider whatever comes to mind to be your personal reaction. Some elements to think about are:
What feeling do I sense in the card scene?*
What feeling do I sense in myself when I see this card?*
Am I attracted, repelled or neutral about this card?
What aspect of my life comes to mind when I see this card?
Does this card remind me of someone?
What details seem important in this card, and why?
*These two feelings may be the same or different.
You may not feel any reaction to the card, or perhaps just a mild one. Try to notice any quick thought, feeling or image that comes to mind, no matter how slight.

Exercise 11.2 - Combining Sources of Meaning
In this exercise, you will practice blending card and position meanings. Choose a card from the tarot deck, and read over its keywords and actions. Try to get a feel for the card's essential meaning.
Imagine that your card has appeared in Position 1 of a Celtic Cross reading. How does being here refine the meaning of this card? How do the card and position meanings work together to create a composite?

Write one sentence that sums up your interpretation. Don't try to figure out the right answer because there isn't one. Select a possibility that appeals to you and makes sense. Your sentence doesn't have to relate to your own life in any way as this exercise is simply for practice.

For example, the Emperor stands for

fathering
structure
authority
regulation
Some choices for this card in Position 1 might be:

Right now, the heart of the matter (Position 1) is that there is too much structure (Emperor) in my life.
My present environment (Position 1) is very regulated and controlled (Emperor).
Right now the issue of becoming a father (Emperor) is the primary factor in my life (Position 1).
These sentences are all different, but each one blends the meanings of the Emperor and Position 1. In an actual reading, the most appropriate interpretation for you would become clear as you considered other factors.

Next, write a sentence for each of the other nine positions using the same card. If you want extra practice, write more than one sentence for each position, or choose a different card and repeat the exercise.

Exercise 11.3 - Interpreting Single Cards in Celtic Cross Readings
Use your ongoing Celtic Cross readings as an opportunity to practice combining the four sources of meaning:

personal reaction
card meanings
position meanings
question or situation
Be systematic at first about considering each of these areas so they become second nature to you. Try writing a sentence for each card as described in Exercise 11.2. Of course, you will not have to write these sentences forever. Later you can be more relaxed and simply respond without having to think about where your reaction comes from.

While visiting friends in Aspen last week, I had a close encounter of the disgraced CEO kind: I spotted Kenny Lay, garbed in a spiffy jogging suit, getting in a little morning cardio not far from one of the two multimillion dollar vacation homes he keeps there. I guess that second-hand shop his wife opened to sell off some of their booty has been doing brisk business.

Truth be told, such scoundrel sightings are not as unusual as they should be. Despite the well-deserved roasting they're currently getting over the media spit, many of the most notorious boardroom bad guys are continuing to live the high-life to which they became accustomed while plundering their companies' coffers.

Even Adelphia's John Rigas, who was forced to do the newly-trendy EPW (Executive Perp Walk) following his arrest, had enough spare change on hand to cover his $10 million bail -- and was back home in plenty of time for a nice family dinner with his indicted sons. You know what they say: The family that eats together, cheats together.

The victims of corporate pillage, meanwhile, are not having it so easy. Faced with scrambled nest eggs, sinking pension plans, shaky health coverage and a gloomy job market, record numbers of average Americans are taking it on the chin -- and in the wallet.

A key indicator of just how bad things have gotten for the little guy is the record number of Americans -- 1.5 million -- who filed for personal bankruptcy in the year ending March 31st. That's one out of every 69 U.S. households.

And since bankruptcies invariably lag behind current economic conditions -- they are the fiscal equivalent of those guys in the circus who follow after the elephants with a shovel, trying to deal with the mess the parade has left behind -- the odds are high that 2002 will be an even better year for bankruptcy attorneys. The first quarter of this year has already seen a record 369,237 filings.

And it's important to note that only 3% of these filings are by people who abuse the system by living extravagant lifestyles and then leaving their creditors holding the bag. The majority are actually low to middle class people who can't pay their bills because they've lost their jobs or been hit with crippling medical bills or been enticed into running up unmanageable credit card balances by easy-credit come-ons and here-today-gone-tomorrow "teaser" interest rates.

Nevertheless, Congress is on the verge of passing legislation that will make it harder for people to start afresh after they declare bankruptcy while, not coincidentally, adding billions of dollars to the bottom line of banks and credit card companies.

And why are our elected representatives so eager to add to the burden of consumers struggling to rebuild their lives amidst tough economic times? Perhaps it has something to do with the $27.5 million the finance and credit industries have contributed to political campaigns since 1990 -- including $3,518,966 so far in the 2002 election cycle.

In addition, credit card giants MBNA, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley were among the top-10 donors to President Bush's 2000 campaign. Is it any surprise that the president has indicated he will sign the bankruptcy bill as soon as it hits his desk? It's the first law of politico-dynamics: You sign a President's checks, he'll sign your bill. Anyone can buy public policy, but it's not cheap. If you have to ask, you probably can't afford it.

For an especially sleazy example of how this Beltway quid pro quo works, look no further than the case of Rep. Jim Moran, the chief Democratic sponsor of the bankruptcy bill. It seems that back in 1998, Moran was about to be buried under an avalanche of hefty credit card balances he couldn't pay off. Things looked grim for the Congressman -- until he was bailed out by a sweetheart loan orchestrated by the generous folks at MBNA.

In a move as shameless as it is despicable, Moran then turned around and helped craft a bill that will make it harder for average consumers who find themselves in the same jam he was in. Will MBNA ride to their rescue as well -- or will it do everything in its newly fortified power to exact its pound of flesh?

It is particularly ironic that Congress was wrapping up its billion-dollar gift to the banking industry during the same week executives of Citigroup and J.P. Morgan Chase were lambasted on Capitol Hill for helping Enron defraud shareholders to the tune of $8 billion dollars. Only in Washington could a pair of companies be publicly raked over the coals -- exposed as bald-faced liars and criminal accessories -- on a Tuesday, and then be blown an all-is-forgiven make-up smooch on Thursday.

So once again big donors get a kiss on the lips and little guys get a kick in the rear, or someplace even more painful. And those trying to dig themselves out of a mountain of debt are not likely to be given a boost by a contracting job market with 8.4 million people out of work and more people seeking unemployment benefits than at any time in nearly 20 years.

No wonder there is a growing anger among the dispossessed. "Never before have I seen the fury and hatred that I'm now seeing on a daily basis," says David Bowman, an employment consultant who tries to find work for people who have been downsized. "You've got thousands and thousands of hard-working people who, through no fault of their own, find themselves broke, out of a job, and with nearly worthless retirement plans."

I realize that life isn't fair. But wouldn't it be nice if it were a little more just? If Kenny Lay, instead of jogging around the streets of Aspen in sweats, were jogging around a jail yard track in stripes?

I was reading this in notepad while in a program that would shut down if I was trying to read it in Explorer...
