The baby who was rescued Friday is fine. Ze was, as I had suspected, 7 weeks old, not 3 or 4 as the rescue volunteer said, and ze was quite healthy and just learning to fly. As I had briefly speculated on Friday morning before it happened, the rescue was not necessary. Baby was well fed and probably had parents nearby. Still, Birds of Prey is keeping hir for now to prevent further human harassment until ze can take care of hirself. In the meantime, a 24-year-old owl who can't be released is fostering the young one for now.
I'm working directly with the Birds of Prey Foundation that is caring for the baby, and with Colorado DoW, to share information about wildlife encounters in urban areas. We have some other plans in mind, too, for awareness throughout the business park, not just with my company. My article is beginning to take shape, and I find myself more than just interested in being involved. I'm hoping to take this to a program level and to help keep these birds protected throughout the area. Education is key, here. And I'm hoping to help provide it.
