View Full Version : Embarrasing Dog Problem--Help!

So, I'm not quite sure how to put this delicately, so I'll just be blunt. My little Carlito Sanchez is having an issue, and I'm not sure if this is something that occasionally happens to dogs or if I should get him to the vet. His penis appears to be stuck (not the whole thing...just the tip...maybe 1 inch?) outside its protective sheath, and it looks to be a little swollen. He's urinating just fine and he doesn't seem to be in any pain, but I'm not sure what to do for him. Should I call the vet? Leave it alone? Or *is going to sound bad*, use some sort of lubricant so it can slide back in? I don't really know much about penises, not having one of my own, and I certainly don't know anything about dog penises, but I'd hate for him to be in any kind of pain or danger. Is this something that happens occasionally, or do we need to take him in?
Feeling pretty silly,

I don't really know much about dogs, but I don't think its a good thing for that to happen. Hopefully a dog person will respond soon, who knows about it.

If this is the first time this is happened, you can try putting triple antibiotic ointment on it to slick it up and prevent an infection, but if he doesn't get it in soon after doing that, vet time. If he does get it in and it gets stuck the next time he lets it out, get to a vet.
Use regular people stuff like Neosporin. Use a lot to get the entire exposed part covered. You may have to slide the foreskin up and back a little to get the antibiotic ointment worked under the edge.
Try it once to see if this is just a one time fluke, but don't repeat if he has the prob repeat because there may be something else wrong.
Dont be embarrassed, these issues happen. Sometimes its a one time thing and sometimes the dog could have some bigger medical prob going on. Better to talk and look for info than have something go terribly wrong.

Thank you for the advice, Shanti! Me and Preston were "girding our loins" (pun intended!) to have to fix him up with some Neosporin, and apparently, it's fixed itself, so it was just a temporary problem. I'm going to keep an eye on it, though, and if it gets any worse or happens again, I'll take him to the vet just to be sure.
Thanks for the help!

myself and the dog people I know call that 'lipstick'
Every once in awhile it, up comming out and then back in is normal, esp in younger dogs and sometimes when they get a little to excited.
They say it happens more to males who have been neutered after maturity, <shrugs> I know it happening sometimes is normal.
Now, if its out for an extended period of time, cant go back in, looks funny, swollen, different color, then its time for the vet.
I have a story, from a friend that might make you feel better.
She was in the petstore with her male GSD, talking to the breeder she got him from, who happened to be there to picking up stuff. They get to talking for awhile and her dog lays down and goes to sleep.
All of a sudden her dog gets up, is hunched over and looks like he is in pain. Of course my friend is like 'omg what do i do'
The breeder looked him over, laughed and said 'nothing just wait for him to finish and clean up'
She of course, was surprised until he told her that her dog thought he was tying with a female.
He, was a young male german shepherd who was comming into maturity. Like, young human males comming into maturity........uh..........stuff happens.
(ok, I tried really hard to put it in terms that were ok for the board...hope I did ok!)
But if anything seems or looks or feels (to you) out of the norm for your dog, it never hurts to make, or even call the vet and ask. (some give free advice over the phone)

Whats a tad shocking is when your mini horse sticks his out!
The first time our mini did that, all that went through my head is not everything is mini on a mini. :awilly:
On a serious note, they do have to be watched because while they hang so low they often get dirty and sometimes need assistance in cleaning debris off of it. :foh:
