the number of children with asthma is increasing every year. do you think its hereditary? is it environmental? is it due to pollution? do you have it?

Hmmm...... a combination of a couple of things?

Doctors say that it's hereditary, but yet I have it when no one else (except my sister) does.

I personally think that it's largely environmental. Children who are raised in large cities are more likely to have respritory conditions later on in life, and asthma as children.

I, on the other hand, was raised in a small town, and didn't get my first asthmatic symptoms until I moved to a city.

I'm really lucky, I don't have it bad enough to be a big worry. It's mostly allergy or cold related, although I do get stuffed up occasionally for no reason. It was worse when I was in University than it was before then, or even now..... so maybe it can be stress related????

I have it. Neither of my parents have it. My mother smoked while she was pregnant with me and I ended up with really horrible asthma when i was younger. Neither my sister or brother had it and my mom didnt smoke while she was pregnant with them. I dont know what that signifies, but it certainly seems a product of the environment.

I have it, and it's definitely inherited - it's common in my Dad's family.

I have to say though that I can definitely breathe better out of pollution and cigarette smoke. Nothing makes me quite as reactive as being in a smoky bar.

They call where I live "The Chemical Valley" even most plants have closed in the last five or ten years. SERIOUSLY. I don't know anyone who doesn't have it. I do.

But since everyone around here also seems to be related becasue we are so isolated. It could also be hereditary.

Don't know.

My brother had it but it went away when we moved to Canada when he was 3 years old. My sister & I were both fine. Our kids are ok too. No asthma. I think the docs said my brother's asthma was due to the dust & smog. We used to live in Hong Kong. He's now 38 & hasn't bother him since then.
