View Full Version : For my ma

My mother is having surgery in the morning.
She needs a heart catheterization.
She is very scared. She has had 4 heart attacks and two strokes already.
Only half of her heart works. I don't know what that means exactly. The docs told her that. It's been that way for a few years. And now the good half is getting blocked. That's what they're trying to fix in the morning.
She's thinks that she's going to die. She's not against death. She's against having another stroke. She asked me to post this thread here for her. She wanted me to ask you guys to pray for her. She cannot handle having another stroke. If she is any worse off than she is now she won't want to live. The last time they tried to do something to her heart they had to stop because they found the clots that later caused her strokes. That's why she fears the surgery so much. She's already lost half of her body's ability to move. She can hardly communicate. She can't take getting worse.
She talks in circles. She's upset that she left her DNR at home when the ambulance came to get her yesterday. She has a hard time communicating. She said that she can't sign another DNR at the hospital without her lawyer there. I don't know if that's right or if I'm understanding her wrong. When she speaks only about 1/4 or her words fit together. She's going to be really upset if she dies in surgery and they bring her back.
I have mixed emotions about the whole situation. I don't even think I can think about my part in this. bleh. yuk. Where's my wall when I need it?
Anyway, can you please keep her in your thoughts? Please help her deal with her fear.

If you know where it is, go there and get it. They SHOULD have it on record at the hospital if she is in the same place as before. Her Primary physician AND cardiologist should ALSO have copies. REMIND THEM.
In the meantime, many hugz to all of you.

I'm in another state. I won't make it down there until Friday. She needs it by 9 tomorrow morning. I will be speaking to her before surgery in the morning. I will ask her to have the docs check her records. Maybe they do have a copy. I didn't think of that. Thank you.
Hopefully my sister will be able to get into my mother's house and get it for her if the docs don't have it. I don't know how she left it. She takes in the bathroom with her every day when she takes a shower. She brings it with her every time she spends the weekend with us. She has it attached to her wheelchair or walker at all times. I don't know how it was left behind. She's really stressing over it though. She did tell me that she doesn't even have shoes at the hospital though. They must have been in a big hurry when they took her.
Thank you everyone. We really appreciate it.

Heart Caths are pretty routine believe it or not...they go in through the femoral artery and look around...they usually do a stent if they find something or what we call a CABG (open heart) which is the worse scenario. Heart Caths are usually same day procedures and if nothing is found the patient is released after laying flat for 4-6 hours. Hospitals might Have a DNR in the medical Records department as a new chart is assembled every time you go, but they all end up in one place.....
Regardless..........Hope all turns out well.

Heart Caths are pretty routine
Yeah, I know. I'm just worried. She worries me. When I talk to her I loose logic and act on emotion. She's always had that effect on me.
I was just looking through old posts somewhere else to find when we went through this last. It was May 14th of last year. They started to go in and found a clot so they stopped. They said it was too high risk to continue. They found another clot and said if they continued it would probably cause another stroke. That's probably why she's so afraid.
Thanks to all of you again. She will appreciate it so much. I do too.
:bigredblu I really hate posting in this section of our forum. She loves you guys though and always wants me to post here for her. She wishes she could type so she could communicate with you on her own.

I just got off the phone with my mother. She's OK.
Thank you all for your help. :hugz:
I feel silly typing this but it's amazing. She has several years worth of medical records with her cardiologist from her heart attacks. And today the doctor told her that he can't find any evidence of past heart attacks. He said she has a fully functioning heart. He can't figure out what is going on. He's keeping her another day to run more tests.
This is not a new doctor. This guy is from the same office she's been seeing for years.
Even better than that is her attitude. She actually seems happy. She never seems happy.
She actually seems pleased she didn't die in surgery. I spent the morning on the phone with her before she went in. All she could talk about was wanting to die. She kept asking me to help her go. It's a total change of attitude from this morning (and most other days).
She's asked me to thank all of you for your help. She says she loves you all.

Miracles happen. They really do. Perhaps she was able to dissolve the clot on her own, gradually, with medication from her cardiologist and the blockage was temporary. That would have been a big help. I bet she is breathing better and feeling better. And has a lot of weight off her shoulders.
And, musn't discount the prayers and hugs sent to her by all your friends here. Sometimes concentrated energy can go a long way.
May all your dieties be blessed and your family make the plans you started.
Carry on luv.
