I am looking to travel somewhere I have never been. The choices are many and should be in the USA.

Any suggestions?

Are you wanting something of a magickal nature or just a scenic adventure? I can suggest several scenic but I honestly don't know the places of power in the USA. You might try the Grand Canyon, North Carolina has some beautiful scenery, Colorado, Maine and Oregon are just a few I can think of right this second... It just depends on what you are wanting out of this vacation.

i'd suggest the national Parks. A couple of years ago, my family and i went to the grand canyon. It was fun, except i kept geting yelled at by my mother for being "too close to the edge". we also saw the petrafied forest! .. this year, we are going to go to yellowstone. Visit ruchmore. and the badlands, and some dinosaur park thing... i dont know. but we are going to be gone during midsummer. it'll be my first midsummer, and i wont be home where all my stuff is! :(

If you are looking for places of power I can suggest a couple, and one of them has some fine fishing to boot!

One is the Chaco Canyon National Monument here in NM and the other is Fenton Lake, in the Santa Fe National Forest. It's near Los Alamos, but really closer to Cuba, NM.

http://www.chaco.com/park/contents.html

http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/nmparks/PAGES/parks/fenton/fenton.htm

There are many more places of power here, this state seems to be covered in them. Maybe it's why I never am too far from NM. Even with my planned move to TX, later this year, I am only 100 miles from NM.

Another place (two really, that I actually worked at) is Blackwater Draw.

Well, so much for my shameless plugs, ;)

:D Casa Grande, Arizona. The ancient ruins of old
native peoples. I hear that you can feel their presence.
I would like to make it back there someday.

Can't help you with this one I'm afraid, as it's out of my fields of knowledge. My knowledge of geography can probably be put onto a pin head, and I'm ashamed to say that I'd probably have trouble finding my way out of a paper bag. (OK, OK we can't all be perfect at everything!). I once decided to travel the 15 miles to a new super duper shopping mall that had just opened. I left at 9.30 in the morning, and arrived home at gone 10 at night. I had traveled over 250 miles, and gone through the Dartford Tunnel six times (paying a toll each time). I 'visited' a high security area at the oil refineries at one point (to this day the authorities don't know how I got in!), and never did get to the shopping mall! I know that America is vaguely 'over there' if I face the sea, but other than that, your out of luck mate!

PS I could tell you about some really magical places in Britain, but that wouldn't be any good, as I couldn't tell you how to get there!

For me a city that truely wakes me up and makes me realize that I am never alone is New Orleans.

I have been there many times and never go out to the bars just wait until the crowds go to bed and then I go alone on the streets

Spirits are alive and well in that city!! Lots to see after hours!! and such great energy to absorb!!

Took an after hours tour the first time with a voodoo preistess. What a night! can send you her name if you deside this is the journey you are looking for!!

Thank you, Dear.

I have been there once. However, there is no interest in VooDoo for me.

I will agree, there is some pretty cool stuff after hours - if there is such a thing in the Frech Quarter.

It was funny, when I arrived, I drove down Bourbon Street. Not a soul on it. But after 6pm - woohoo party time.

Cape Cod is beautiful - and lazy. If rest and relaxation are on the agenda, it's a wonderful retreat.

Key west has all those Hemingway Cats and drop dead sunsets.

New York City is wonderful in the summertime - Central Park is bursting with culture, concerts, and activity. The museums are awesome, and Greenwitch Village is invitingly Bohemian at night - offering many pleasures and lots of excitement.

Virginia Beach offers Pat Robertson, over-crowded beaches, strict rules and regulations, and a 30 story drop off of the hotel's parking lot.

:)

I have been to a lot of places but none had the spiritual impact on me like the Grand Canyon, awesome!
My connection came at Mesa Verde which is around the four corners area, i was walking through one of the small scattered ruins and felt a presence, it was as if someone were standing next to me looking at the ruins,
most intense moment. I tried to make it back this year and as a matter of fact i had to cancel because i have to have knee surgery (arthroscopic) on May 1...maybe i'll make it later on in the year.
If you've never been, i believe this area to be the most spiritual in the country...speaking of course of the four
states of...colorado, new mexico, utah and my favorite
arizona. but whereever you go...enjoy.

Not into voodoo either just out for something new to try
A friend had told me of these unique tours!!

I just figured only live once and went for it!!
at least I didn't get bruises like some of the other things I've just tried once!! Like hangliding, parasailing, and didn't get seasick or have a problem drinking the water!!

Oh by the way I learned the hard way ice is still the same type of water in mexico!! Boy did I learn!

You could always give the Fates a shot and see where they send you.

Hang a map of the US on the wall (preferably with some sort of protection for the wall).

Close your eyes.

Throw a dart at it. You could even turn your back and throw it for added 'spice'. hehe

Go where ever it lands. It may not be an exciting 'hot spot' but it undoubtedly has history and folklore to check out.

Suggestively,

One place I go a lot with myfamily is Virginia. We mainly stay more near the coast, but interior VA is beautiful. Being from NY, I also prefer the Catskill Mountains. There's some adorable B&B's near Woodstock, NY, which is a great place. I live about 2 hrs. south of there and go on day trips a lot. Then about 2 years ago, I took my son up to Minnesota. We didn't get to see all that much, (we were visiting a friend who, shall we say, had limited freedom). We mainly stayed in a town called Sandstone, and they have a great state park there. It's a river gorge, with waterfalls. It was just beautiful.

I hope I helped!

I hope I helped! With info like this... a town called sandstone w/ a state park that has a river gorge and waterfalls...day trips to the catskills...HELPED!
Makes me want to packup and leave this moment, im in the northeast and close to them.
Another beautiful place to go for pure outdoor pleasure is New Hampshires' White Mountains, there are caves for the kids and yourself to climb through, cold mountain streams just to sit in on a hot day...but that's not all, they have a lot of attractions geared to keep the kids happy and you in a relaxed state of mind.
Helped? I think so ladystarlight. keep helping us!

I have so many favorite nature and camping spots that I have found over the years. Colorado was beautiful, and I have done the Catskills and Adirondacks of New York, hiked and camped in Maine, the White Mountains of New Hampshire but my favorite scenic area would be the Appalachian Trail in the Green Mountains of Vermont. There are many camping areas in the Green Mountains that can be accessed by walking trail, car and also are primitive dirt roads or trails which require a 4-wheel drive vehicle. Route 9 in Bennington Vermont is the start of the Green Mountains and there are access entrances off that route that will take you into the mountains (which is legal). Also, Route 3 in New Hampshire I found a few trails that took me into the White Mountains in the thick pines with a beautiful waterfall in the middle of nowhere, so we set up camp, it was beautiful! honored to show you the beauty, etc., of British
Columbia...Barkerville, Butchart Gardens in Victoria,
along Hwy. 20, and more. :D

I just got back from New Orleans last week. My third time there. Yes, it is a fun city. If you plan a trip there, make sure you do a cemetery tour, and the voodoo tour with a visit to Marie Laveau's (voodoo queen) gravesite. Also, the Spiritual Temple of VooDoo is an "authentic" voodoo temple, where they have rituals and also a shop to pick up a Gris Gris bag. I also went on the Witchcraft Tour done by Esoterica Shop. There are many voodoo, witchcraft and new age shops in the area. Also a store called Westgate Necromancy Shop. And, Gargoyles which carries goth, fetish and medieval/renaissance clothing. I purchased a pair of black thigh-hi's that lace up the back. he he he. Jackson Square has many artists, palm readers, astrologists, tarot readers, mimes, musicians, tap dancers, henna tatooers, etc. And, of course there is the nightlife! Amazing music, clubs, bars, and of course bead-collecting for hooters, he he he. If you need any information I have a full sheet of stores, tours, restaurants and bars to go to. MystyPines@snet.net

thanks for the kind words about vermont mystypines, the vermont access to "the long trail" is on route 9 in woodford just outside bennington to the left as you enter a right curve by the old white church building and it will take you right up through the green mountains and eventually to mt. katadin in maine but it's a bit of a hike. it's black bear country so store your food accordingly and dispose of your trash properly.

Oh Gunner! I have met up with a few black bears while camping in an area off Rt. 9 in Bennington, called "Suckers Pond." I just love the area and maybe someday I will be able to rest myself in Vemont in a little cottage out in the woods where I can have my herb garden, he he he.

I'm also from NY but the otherside of the state. If you want some nice places to go in western NY, try Nigra Falls, Letchworth Park in Mt. Morris, or perhaps Canadaguia. I live in the Fingerlakes Region, it's absolutly wonderful countryside. There's alot of b&bs there and alot of history too. I know alot of the history of the Geneseo-Mt. Morris region, but I grew up there too. <lol> Aside from that, if you can tolerate the crowds, try DC. It's absolutely lovely this time of year with the cherry trees in blossom. I was over there recently, if anything the Smithsonian is worth the hassle of city driving. :)

you forgot the restored parts of the erie canal that can be followed through most of upper new york state. the canal was an important influence on the growth of this country in the early 19th century before the railroads.

(remember, "low bridge, we're a'comin' to a town/ low bridge, everybody down", we all learned that one in school when i was a kid)

cydira
April 21st, 2001, 11:01 PM
Yikes! Gunner, you're starting to make me think you're from some where near my hometown! <lol>

Yeah, the Erie canal is nice, but if you want some really interesting history, try looking into the Allegheny -pennyslvania canal. It hasn't been restored but if you get a chance to follow along where it was, you'll go through an area that was once a town and now rubble as a result of the Genesee river flooding almost 100+ years ago. There's also the Arcade-Attica area that's nice if you stay out of Attica proper. The town has suffered alot because of the prison and the loss of other major industry. It's not the best of places to go on vacation.

If you can *tolerate* getting lost in a city, try going in the easterly direction instead. Go to Ithica, it's a wonderful city, but the roads are impossible to navigate at times. :) Let me think, what else is nice in the Fingerlakes region...

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. There is a winery tour in the area around Canadaguia. If you want to get some interesting beverages and plesant scenery, that could work too. :D
