I'm really not into rituals, but live my life in kindness and understanding. I try to keep the sabbats and light a candle, But I'm not into the whole circle thing. Should this matter to me?

Just my thought but I would think that you should go with your feeling. If you feel like you are right on track then you are. but if you feel like something is missing...then maybe it is missing. thats the real question?

how do YOU feel about it?

-- Posted by wiccamags on 7:00 pm on Dec. 31, 1969
I feel comfortable and happy with my life, just not with rituals. But when I read anything about Pagans and Wiccans, they always talk about rituals.

-- Posted by loveflower on 7:00 pm on Dec. 31, 1969
maybe you are the exception? everyone walks the Path their way, and maybe yours dont include rituals.

-- Posted by Rosabelle on 7:00 pm on Dec. 31, 1969
You don't have to do rituals to be a Pagan. Certainly NOT!!! some people do ilaberate rituals, some just do them in their head and some don't do them at all!
i have to ask, do you do spells? because some people who don't do rituals don't do spell work either because they think they don't need to. do you think this?

I believe that you are Pagan. You still acknowledge the turning of the wheel with the Sabbats. If it is your way to just burn a candle for them so be it. That is your path and you are happy with it. A lot of people should be so lucky to find a path that they are equally happy on. I am happy for you.

I may be wrong in saying this, but isn't Paganism (in short) the worship of nature?

I know many paths which live with kindness and understanding, and they are not Pagan.

Every religion has rituals of some sort, and even Catholics cast spells.

I think we are missing the boat here...How do you feel about nature? That will answer your question about Paganism. Pagans hold nature first in spirituality, that is what makes us Pagan. Not rituals or spell casting.

"Paganism" is not Magick or the workings of Magick. All religions use Magick in their own way... nature, that is the key.

Let us know, I am eager to see how you (and others) feel about it.

May You Live True

I agree with that definition of Pagan and feel that some people get involved in paganism because of the desire for power or to manipulate the mundane. As one that has heard the trees speek, I have found that attuning oneself to the rhythms of the earth to be the most natural of things to do. What makes it difficult is the way we have been socially programed to abuse and disregard the beauty and power of nature itself. One of the things I am working on now is to complete my coven's Touch the Earth exercise. It's pretty chewy.
I will post it so that others may also look to their connection with the world around them.

Touch the Earth:
an exercise in learning where you live.

Witches worship the Great Mother, the Earth.
To make this love and worship real, in our group, we work for Her protection and healing, both magically and practically, as our own best talents lead us. This work begins with getting to know Her as She manifests in our own local environment.

1.Trace the water that you drink from precipitation to tap.
2. What sort of soil is predominant in this place?
3. What are its geological and hydrological associations?
4. Name five native edible plants in your region and the season(s) that they are available.
5. How long is the growing season where you live?
6. What was the total precipitation in your area last year (July - June)? (Slack: one inch or centimetre for every twenty inches or centimetres)
6. Name five birds that live in your area. Which are migratory and which are year-around residents?
7. How did the indigenous people of your area obtain their subsistence from nature?
8. What use have humans made of this land during the past two centuries?
9. Where does your garbage go and how does it get there?
10. From what direction do winter storms generally come in your region?
11. What primary ecological event/process influenced the land form where you live?
12. Bonus question: what is the evidence?
13. What species have become extinct in your area?
14. When do the deer rut in your region, and when are their young born?
15. What spring wildflower is consistently among the first to bloom where you live?
16. Name five grasses in your area. Are any of them native?
17. What species of plant typically live in close association in your region?
18. How recently was the Moon full?
19. What kind of energy do you primarily use? where does it come from? and at what cost to the natural environment?
20. Where is there "wilderness" in your bioregion?
21. What are the primary sources of pollution in your region?
22. What are the major "natural" sounds you are aware of in any particular (name it) month or season?

You're are most welcome. I will always try to share what I can.
Please post the exercise at will. Sharing Her love is our Purpose. As mentioned, I am working on completing the answers to each question myself and it is quite the endevor.
Proper credit is as follows:

Like eaglewolf, I too, was very moved by your touch the earth endeaver. Sadly enough I knew the answers to very few of the questions. The one about where does your garbage go really struck a cord with me. Our main concern has usually been that the guys get it picked up from the curb before the neighborhood dogs get to it. I think I shall start my search in this area. Will post when I find out. Thank you so much for the boost!! I will get on it as soon as my weekend is over...work work work!!

Absolutely, I really enjoyed that....I will use it!

I am ahead of myself: Wiccanmags, I want to welcome you to our community and seeing how eaglewolf, Litha, and others have already given you sound advice I will not add...except for one thing...a quote from eaglewolf:

"May You Live True"

Just Be, my friend...and you will not go wrong.

Blessings!

Yow, talk about garbage, I just chased after my SO who insists on throwing cans in the trash. I made him stop in the doorway so I ferret them out before he tossed it. Can't figure it out since there is already a separated section for plastic, cans and paper I made in the kitchen. You can find me midweek checking through our garbage to make sure nothing escapes me.
Everytime I try to start a compost, it gets trashed since noone but me can stand to have rotting organics inside. Thing is, I don't put animal products in there so it doesn't smell. I think it's just the idea of encased decomposing items in the house that wierd people out.

My mother in law had a nice compost pile that she started outdoors. She just put up some chicken wire and had a pen for all her goodies. She was able to use it for fertilizer and it worked great. Me, I am a baby gardener/farmer. We are anxious to start our first garden this year and I am looking for Mr. Green thumbs himself, aka eaglewolf to hold our hands through the ordeal!

Ha, ha...

Actually, I have to thank my *non-Magickal* grandfather for my "green thumb." He was one of the best!!!

It is the mundane approach to gardening which makes me so resourceful, believe it or not. You can't have a successful garden with Magick alone... and if you can, someone clue me in please...

...it would be so much easier

Most of my plants are at my parents house and they are so happy there I don't have the heart to bring them over. I have one plant a peace lily for her positive feng shui effects.

We are very tolerant of our pets, and though it can be bothersome, cleaning up the dirt off the floor and the mess out of the plants is part of the "job" around here.

My mother, however, was not as tolerant as we...

...it may seem cruel to some, but she used a squirt gun filled with water. Zap the pretty kitty a few times with that baby, and they stop getting in...

I don't know if this was a helpful post or not!

...is this still on topic?...

Actually, saying *non-Magickal* is a little off, because I think everyone uses Magick in everything they do! Magick (to me) is the art of making things happen. Now if you subscribe to this theory..then Magick could be...I want the door to open (so I walk over and open it.) I Willed it to be..and it happened.

So, in making a garden (especially when doing this) you do use a lot of Magick, even without knowing it. Magick is a part of everyone and wether or not they want to admit it...we use it on a daily basis.

-- Posted by eaglewolf on 7:00 pm on Dec. 31, 1969
I agree with the non-Magick comment, which is why I added the * *. Now that I think about it, non-Pagan would have been more appropriate... well, you know what they say about hind sight.

Touch the Earth is wonderful, do you mind if I use the material (without the references to Goddess and witches) for my Girl Scout troop? We teach honor and respect for nature, and spirituality without pushing any one religion.

Someone asked how to keep cats out of plants. My mother-in-law says to sprinkle cayanne pepper on the dirt.
The cats don't want that on their paws. They'll stay out of it. I don't know if it works or not. All our cats are outside and the dogs are inside.

If you think you're a pagan, then you are one. If you think you're not, you're not. It's that simple. The only label you should ever really worry about is the one you put on yourself based on your own personal understanding and insight. What other label you is beside the point always, for they are not you, do not know what definition you hold pure to yourself. Every word comes with so many different definitions and so many different understandings depending on who views them, and what their life experience and understanding has been. My opinion means nothing to anyone but myself. Ditto for you.

Dont be too hasty. Actually your opinions can mean a lot to someone if they choose to let them mean something.

Blessings!

That was quite profound mol. I will definitely be using that quote.

Perhaps, but they won't mean the exact same thing as they do to the individual involved. Okay, example, take the word Pagan (seems like a good choice for this forum ;)). Now to me, that means earth based religion that often, but not always involves the use of magick. I could give this definition to you, but even doing that I'm not telling you everything else that pops into my head when the word 'pagan' is used. Catch my drift?

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question and also for the information on nature, keeping rubbish, gardening and how to deal with cats.
To answer a few of your questions.
I am very in tune with nature, I try to preserve all living things and find beauty in all things.
I don't know if this counts as spell casting, but a have a talent for causing things to happen under intense emotion and I do have dreams that in some way predict some events. I have read books on drawing down the magic, but find this very showy and dramatic for myself. For others it may be great, I do not judge anyone for their beliefs or how they live their lives.
I believe that SOMETHING guides us though life, I don't know what and I wouldn't put a name to she/he or it, but something looks after me, in times of trouble.
I look forward to learning more from you all and hopefully become a frequent visiting member of the community.

I catch the drift...here is mine...

If I choose to let your definition mean something to me, then it could cause me to change my definition to fit what you (in your opinion) have defined. So, your opinion does matter...when someone wants it to matter.

:) Heh. Sounds like a Zen thing.
