Hi. I don't mean to bum everyone along with me. But I am very sad today. My doggie (i have a zoo at my house, 3 dogs and one cat) is very very sick. He's old, 15 and he has arthritis. It's gotten very bad recently. To the point where he can't walk so good. He's overweight too, so it's hard to lift him up. I'm so upset by it, because I don't know what I can do to make him feel any better. He's the best dog in the world. He's a golden retriever and his name is J.D. (Just Dog). We rescued him when he was a pup from an abusive owner. He's giving me the sad eyes and now he cries at night and I'm sure it's because he's in pain. The vet gave us some medicine, but I don't think it's working so good. I just wish I could do something, but I seem to be at a loss. It's like my brain isn't working or something, probably because I'm so sad.
If anyone has any ideas on how I can help him, please let me know.

I feel for you that is a terrible thing to have to watch. My doberman of 13 years was recently like that. He was so ill he could barely walk anymore. All I could do was cry because I knew it was his time. I could not watch him suffer anymore I had to put him to sleep. The vet said his circulation was slowing down so he would have went on his own shortly. I had to help him as much as it hurt me. I will be thinking of you and your dog...I hope you both come through this ok...although I have no advice to really offer.

there are olny two choices now, at his age and i'd say that one of them is no choice for you. think of this, by nursing your old dog now you are giving back for a dog lifetime of his love and loyalty. when he passes he will take your love with him into "that good night" and that will make the passing easier for him. dogs may not be "people smart" but they know when they are loved and how to give it back.

I know its hard pets are such wonderful things in our lives :). I guess the only thibg to do is make him as comfy and happy as possible. My cat got shot a few days ago by a bb gun and he got tuna, milk, ect.. I think if he catches on though he'll just act sick eheh.
Get well soon doggy,

i hope you reported that cat shooting to the cops, that's cruel, stupid and irresponsible behavior no matter what sort of "gun" was used and speaking as a "man-at-arms" it should not go uncomplained of.

My heart goes out to you. I was in the same situation last year. I raise German Shorthaired Pointers (I love a dog with spirit) and ended up keeping a runt from a litter, he had many health problems but was a happy boy, so I just fell in love with him from the start. People kept trying to have me put him to sleep because he just wasn't right (and tell me a person who is) but I didn't have the heart to do it, he wasn't in pain or suffering he was just a little odd. I came home from work one day and something wasn't right. He wasn't eating, was moping and just not himself. I took him to the vet and he died that night from a brain tumor, so there wasn't really any decision for me. I only had him for 3 years but they were 3 very amusing years. Either way it's a rough decision to make. I know I'll always have a part of him with me.
(hugs) I know what your're going through

This is a tragedy, I'm sure. Just pet and love him. I'm sure you will be repayed for your love and kindness.
Lift up your chin and know that YOU have been loved all of those years too.
Blessings to you and he,

He knows he is loved, just comfort him and do what you need to help him along his journey. This is so very hard.

I've never had to watch any of my pets at the very end. I feel for you. When my pets died they always took off first. I guess they wanted to spare us the pain or something. I'm not sure. <sigh> Times like this, I miss them...

Today, he didn't seem too good. So I talked to my dad (JD actually belongs to him) and he said when he gets back from Vacation, he's going to take him to the vet and see if he can do anything for him.
JD didn't seem too happy today. I wanted to get him outside, but I'm real busy here at work today and can't get away. My boyfriend is working today too, so it's tough. He can only walk out a few feet on my patio, then falls down in the sand and just lays there. I think this is the hardest thing I've ever had to watch.
Thank you all gain for your kind thoughts and words.

LdyStarlite,
I was just wondering how the 'big puppy' is doing today?

It's hard to lose a pet. They give everything to us
unconditionally, and still are abused by some people.
I used to have a red Doberman, double registered,
he was friendly and woudn't hurt anyone.
Someone shot him several times in the hips with a
pellet rifle, and he had to be put down. I cried for
days. It was fortunate that I did not find out who
shot him.

I had two red Dobermans they were the sweetest most loving dogs. I just recently had to put my last Dobey to sleep (as I mentioned before). I have a Lab/Retreiver now but I'm really considering getting another Red Doberman. They are my favorites!!
