Weird question coming from someone who loves the runes so much, but since I want to get to know them much better... what, exactly, -is- the difference between the various AEttir from one another? Anyone? Aside from Names.

Hi Hamelyn,
Look in the stuck thread at the top of this forum ~ All about Runes ~ each Aettir is named in there as ~
1st ~ Freya's
2nd ~ Hagal's
3rd ~ Tyr's

Ill add this thread there too now :) Thanks for bringing this up

The 24 runes are divided into 3 sets of 8. Each of these sets is called an aett. Each set is often referred to by the name of a Norse God/ess (Freya's, Hagal's/Heimdall's, and Tyr's AEttir) I have also seen them referred to only as the 1st, 2nd and 3rd aettirs and this is usually the way I refer to them.

The first (or Freya's) aett is concerned with:

~ love, life and happiness.

~ If you see a lot of these runes in your casting, you may want to watch. It could indicate that you are: overly concerned with having these; Not being willing to give of yourself emotionally for balance; and You are not thinking it through before you act.

The second (or Hagal's/Heimdall's) aett is concerned with:

~ money, achievements and success.

~ You may want to watch if you have a lot of this aett because you may be lacking the action needed to obtain these - or lacking thinking the action throughh before persuing it.

The third (or Tyr's) aett represents areas of:

~ Intellect, understanding and spiritual growth.

~ A large number of these runes in a casting may indicate that you are lacking taking action - thinking too much about doing it, or Lacking centeredness and being certain of what you want.

When placed in Futhark order, the Runes tell the same story as the Voluspa in The Poetic Edda... from Creation to Ragnarok to Re-Creation... in Frey's Aett, the Gods & all other beings come into being (Creation thru Golden Age of the Aesir)... Hel's Aett describes the antagonistic forces necessary for cosmic balance (Golden Age thru Age of Heimdal's Children)... Tyr's Aett gives an overview of the human condition (Age of Heimdal's Children thru Ragnarok)... then the Futhark starts over, (Re-Creation)...

Thanks all. I'm glad that you both could help me with that. Relating it to the story was very helpful, I might add: but then, I'm a fascinated with the notion of story telling. I don't know too much about the tales that I'd like to study, though I'm working on changing that. If either of you can suggest some good reading that the modern world would have on the subject it'd be greatly appreciated.

Again, thanks to both of ye.

For Rune related tales, I'd go straight to the Source... The Poetic Edda... I'd recommend the Lee M. Hollander (Univ. of Tex. Press) translation... check your local library...

Ooooo, I'll be sure to check that out. Anymore reading materials related to that, that you think would help with understanding Runes better? :)

I seem to remember Rick posting a list of book recomendations. I think it may be in one of the links posted up top.
