I just got a letter today from the International Library of Poetry, and they've read the poem I submitted to their website a while ago, and are going to publish it in their upcoming coffee table book!!! I am so excited! :D Then I have a chance later of winning money for it if it gets chosen for the grand prize! ::does happy dance:: Anyone who's interested, I'll post it on the Lit. and Poetry board..

I've heard of scams that are fairly similar to this. Do some research before you give your poetry away, not knowing where it will end up.

Yeah I thought about that, but this site came to me from a pretty credible source, fast web.. for scholarship stuff for college. Also they said they copyrighted it in my name (or so they claimed hehe) but I think that'd be a pretty risky thing to lie about. I don't think it's a scam.
(and ps I'm** being published.. lol.. slight excited finger slip! ;) )

Yes, like the one at http://www.poetry.com/ which is exposed as a scam at http://windpub.org/literary.scams/ilp.htm , http://www.toad.net/~andrews/scam.html , and more info at http://www.winningwriters.com/scambustingsites.htm
I had to threaten to sue them for them to agree they would take my poetry off their site if I asked (being as I never told them they could publish or post it)

Congratulations!!! And yeah.. that place is legit.. they've published 3 of my poems so far, in the last 3 or 4 years. :) I just might be in the same new book as you!
Congrats again.. it's an amazing feeling, isn't it? Feel free to dance around singing, "I'm a published poet.. I'm a published poet!" It's great fun.

How exciting, Tempestuous! Congratulations! I too am getting work published. However, I am not as thrilled about it. The university which I go is deciding to publish my work; however, they never asked me for permission. Do you guys know if public insitutions have to ask for permission or does any work turned in belong to the university?

If you visit the links you'll see what I mean. You can find more info at http://www.google.ca/search?q=international+library+of+poetry+scam&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
My experience with them, as I mentioned, was them publishing my work without my permission. :)

God I feel so stupid. And my poem is good.. that's why it seemed credible, the website was impressive and I found it on a well known scholarship website!! That just isn't right... Here I told people and everything... :dis:

I'm sorry hon.
The exact same thing happened to me a few years ago.
You aren't stupid at all. It's just them taking advantage of people :( on them

They've never taken advantage of me..... they've always been straight forward with me... giving me all copyrights and everything.

It happened to me, too, Tempest. I'm sorry:) Just be smart about it hon.
One thing I would reccomend, is as quickly as possible, take an original copy of your poem down to the courthouse, and send it to yourself at your home address, via certified mail.
It is not quite the same thing as a copyright, HOWEVER, it stands as evidence in a court of law. Because if you have the original copy, which is dated before the publish date of their copy..it proves you wrote it first....(hopefully).

Now, I am not a poet so the issue of the site in question is not an issue for me. As always "Let the buyer (or anyone else for that matter) beware. For those of you who are interested in being published I can tell you that despite what you think it is not easy. If however you want to find a market for your work then you might want to invest in either a copy of "The Writers Market" or their online service. It is a professionals clearing house. They don't publish books or promise to publish yours. They carry information, updated regularly, on agents and publishing houses and the guidelines and requirements of each agent or house. You will save yourself much grief by using it. They even break houses down in the genres that they cover. Like any other endeavor you must do your homework first. By the way if you would like a qiuck easy way to establish "rights" to a work then make a copy of it and mail it to yourself. Put the name of the work on the outside. DO NOT open it when it arrives. Put it away in a safe location. In the event you must prove a work is yours then you can present the UNOPENED envelope with postal date on it to the approprtiate authorities. Though not 100% foolproof it will help establish a claim to a work.

Is it really a scam? I sent a poem there a long time ago....and I actually got a book w/mine and other peoples works in it.

Yup they do publish the poems.
The scam is, according to the sites, that they're doing it just to get you to buy their books. I'm so glad I had the feeling that they were just trying to get me to pay so much money for that stuff, so I didn't sign the releases or anything. I was in grade 9 or 10 at the time I think..? Mind you they probably still published my work in the books as I know they've published it on the site.
Anyway as well, being published in this book is so easy. I believe it was Street Cents who wrote a poem and submitted it. The poem was openly bashing the poetry contest company, and yet they received a 'personal acceptance' letter and spam to buy the books, as well as notification they were on to the next round of contests and could win a lot of money.
So it's up to you to decide.
(incidentally I'm not saying anyone who's been accepted there doesn't write well, I'm sure you all have awesome poems and writing skills)

Also, have you heard anythin from the shakesperain Soceity of Poetry? I can't remember what exactly it was called... Hope it's credible lol.

Not true, not true. The certified mail thing doesn't hold up in a court of law. This was offically ruled against acouple of years ago, if I recall correctly.
The ONLY thing that holds up in court is a valid registered copyright from a government.

Amberlaine is right here.

Ohh, sorry not right here. That is the easiest way to prove in court yes, but there are also other things that will work. The WGA provides a registration service not just for scripts but also for poetry, book manuscripts, etc. Here is the link Writer's Guild (http://www.wga.org)

Interesting. However, from what I understand, a copyright will hold up internationally. I'm not so sure about this "Registration" process, since it might not fall under the international copyright agreement (whose name I Cannot remember). And since you can't be sure only AMericans will be stealing your work, you really want to have yor work protected by a legal copyright.
