The government has announced that it will publish guidance for schools on how creationism and intelligent design relate to science teaching, and has reiterated that it sees no place for either on the science curriculum.

It has also defined "Intelligent Design", the idea that life is too complex to have arisen without the guiding hand of a greater intelligence, as a religion, along with "creationism".

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/06/25/id_not_science/Well, why should any religion's mythology be taught as science, anyway? The whole idea is ridiculous. Now, if only the US would follow.

i dont think it should be taught as a science but, if you're gona teach religious education in schools why not look at the scientific view on how the world was created etc? i dont see the harm in that. at least R.E. wont be as onesided - the R.E. i had taught mostly about Christianity and dropped the names of a couple other religions but didnt give any detail.

The problem isn't with religious education. The problem is that they are trying to teach the idea of a higher being having created the world as science, when it's a matter of faith, not science.

I think creationism and Intelligent Design should only be taught in RE classes, not science. Science is what you can see, feel, touch, etc (i.e. the physical realm), religion and spirituality are about the spiritual realms, things you can't "prove" to anyone, only to yourself (if even that).

In my RE classes, we learnt about Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism and Skihism, as well as a few others, I think, which was quite cool learning about those religions.

I think that it is important to know about different religions, but the teachings of any religion shouldn't be taught as "science", unfortunely, I've seen that happen with some Wiccans, who will try and tie in the "3 fold law" with Quantum physics or their reasons why magic works with pseudo-science or psuedo-psychology.

Religion and spirituality and science are 2 very different things, and should be seperate.

Sorry for getting on a rant towards the end ;).

but some people dont necessarily believe a higher being created the world, some believe it had something to do with science. i dont see why that point of view cant be taught. im not saying it should be taught in the Science subject itself but maybe different views should be taught in R.E., rather than just the view of that a higher power created the world.
