I think of these reported appearances of the Divine Mother as holographic phenomena, interior images issuing forth, projected out from the collective human psyche, archetypal code in iconographic form, showing us what we need to honor, to include, to bring home, in order to redeem the world: the sacred feminine. To me that means according women and girls full partnership in the world, it means acknowledging the depth of intimacy in our relationship to the world of nature, our constant feeding and suckling, the wealth of riches the natural world provides, the right of all creatures to live in her, the sacredness of her body, to extend the metaphor. Perhaps Marian apparitions are a Western way of glimpsing what the world's mystical traditions and the East have always known: Creation, nature, is the body of God. Not for our dominion but for our communion, our common union.

The Divine Mother comes when the world is in trouble, these stories tell us, whether the ancient story of Durga, the appearances of the Virgin Mary the world over, or this Tara in the rock at Pharping. The ways in which she comes, the forms in which she reveals herself, this is what is different, the outward manifestation, the cultural context, not the inner reality.
