being any religion other than Christian. Seriosly..we have about 11 chuches in this town, but no synagogue within a half hour drive, and no mosque within the same driving distance..and to get to the nearest bhuddist temple, you have to go to Providence, which is probably a 45 minute to an hour drive. That should tell you just a little about how little people in my town know about other religions, or embrace them. Actually, a terrible thing happened to the closest synagogue recently. Someone spray painted a swastika on their sign. I felt so sickened by that

Indecent exposure.
No seriously, as I'm reminded everytime I visit anything from Walmart to the grocery store to school, we've got like our own little portion of TO wildlife ;)

Don't live on a commune out in the woods! :T The people down in the town hate us! They tell people we don' t have toilets and stuff and actually tried to rezone the city to exclude us. Hahaha like we didn't think of that! The land we built on is out of the city limits already :D What morons!

Oh my lord, where do I start??? Being "liberal," not christian, bisexual or homosexual, different (read: being not preppy or "hick"), etc, etc. I hate my town. Oh, and the nakedness and indecent exposure? There are quite a lot of people who eschew common decency and refuse to wear clothes (this is in my high school). I probably sound like I'm being an old fogey, but I'm so sick of seeing girls' butts hanging out of their shorts...(which is weird coming from ME!)

being a hick.
Since I was raised in a small town and have lived in a large city for 8 years now I find I am a taboo wherever I go (not like I care).
I am too city for the Country and too country for the city!

Driving rationally. No really, this is a problem here. If you don't believe me ask a car insurance company. Oh and what Wild Child said, "dancing nekkid in the streets". But I think Driving Nekkid has been done here....

Yes, now where do I start? Ah, not being a Catholic (yes, being of other Christian denomination is considered almost a blasphemy, not to mention other religions). Homosexuality, bisexuality, living with someone without marriage, being a single mother, divorce, and many others. In fact I live in a big city where all these things are not that visible because people don't know each other. But in small villages there is really strong intolerance of anyone who is in some way different. I really hate it about Poland.

The biggest here would have to be not dressing respectably in town. Wearing sloppy clothes or bathing suits while shopping is a no-no... the only other big one would be regarding religion.... same old, same old, there.

Well, people in Puerto Rico are more tolerant, for what I can see. Taboos here depend on the social class though, If you are the daughter of a rich guy you cant have a boyfriend from a lower social class, and vice versa. Hum, protestants dont like their children having boyfriends or girlfriends from a different religion. Catholics tend to be more tolerant, maybe just pretend to be. Dont know many jewish here, most people here are christians- catholics.
Our main problem is with the political ideals. We have 3 political parties (PPD, PNP and PIP) PIP--> want independence from USA. PNP--> want PR to become a State. PPD--> created the comon wealth and want to keep it. PIP--> are seen like terrorists. Comming from a PNP family means that you cant feel in love with someone PIP or PPD. PPD are against PNP and more or less against PIP. PIP are agains PPD and PNP. I just hate politics so I will leave this topic here
Some people (like my father LOL!) judge others from the way they dress, if they have tatoos or piercings. But, with time, we are becoming more tolerant. There are so many people wearing piercings and tatoos here that we cant be intolerant about it LOL!
Oh, it is illegal walking nakkid and all that- we have the same US laws (we are a US colony, err, territory ;) )

I'm not sure if anything is taboo here. LOL We have these few local freaky "celebrities"... like Speedo Man. He only wears speedo's.. even in the dead of winter. He's a weird one. He's been arrested a couple times, cause he likes to do exercise in the park.. and when he stretches, it becomes obsene. LOL
Then we've got Jesus. He dresses like Jesus and carries this massive cross... honestly, it looks too large and heavy to be carrying.. but he does it anyways. All day long, we walks up and down the streets, not saying a word.
We had Air Guitar Guy.. haven't seen him in a couple years. Whenever he was on a sidewalk, he would play air guitar.. and when he would step off onto the street, he would stop.
With people like these here.. everything else seems normal.

Our only taboo is really not being Christian in some way or another. they don't care what denomination. *giggles* we have what i call Religious Row. Its a whole bunch of churches all on the same street. Chatholic, Babtist, Holiness, ect.
SpikesPet I know how you feel. :D We have the Jesus Guy here. He stands on street corners and will save your soul and give you a bible. He has big signs that say "Honk for Jesus" and "Jesus Saves" he doesn't dress up or anything.
The only thing that irritates me is when some of his 'friends' (and i use that term lightly because he's nice and they ain't) get in the local grocery store parking lot and start preaching to people. And their not nice about it. They started screaming at and about me because i walked away from them. Oh well

Considering what's happened around here lately...being a crooked politician. The county exec resigned one step ahead of a successful recall effort after pretending he didn't know a sweetheart retirement deal meant BIG bucks for him. Now most of the county supervisors are facing recall efforts or serious competition in the next elections. The mayor went public with his adultery...one step ahead of 'the other woman' suing him for sexual harassment. But being 'a stand-up guy' didn't save his career. He isn't going to resign, but he's already kissed any higher office (or even re-election as mayor) good-bye.
Milwaukee politics hasn't been this interesting for years.
There is a Christian preacher the cops keep trying to stop, but not for preaching. He drives around in a beat-up junk station wagon. It & a big sign on top of the car are covered with Biblical sayings & predictions of doom (for non-Christians). The driver preaches as he drives with a really bad address system (he's almost impossible to understand). The cops try to stop him because the car is not street-safe (bits of it keep dropping off), he stops in no-parking zones or drives too slow so he can make announcements about who is going to hell, or he's too loud. He's a minor annoyance because he doesn't get out of the car to hand out tracts or hassle people.

Definitely, it's DON"T BE GAY! I see gay men and women, who are obviously not bothering anyone and just living their lives like everyone else, and I've seen people, even friends of mine, be just plain hateful to them. The only time I had an objection was one time in the movie theater two gay guys were sitting right in front of my daughter and me, and they were like trying to swallow eachother's faces. My daughter didn't understand, I explained it to her the best I could, and I finished with, they're obviously in love, but such explicit displays of affection in public are, in my opinion, inappropriate, whether it's hetero- or homo- sexual. There have been several assaults and a murder here in the past year because someone was "offended" by what they perceived to be someone else's sexual preference. So, that's the one I see in my 'hood. And this one time, at band camp...

Well in my profession and in my community......not being one of the major three religions.....Judiasm, Xianity, and Islam.
Being openly democrat......also being bisexual if you're not this way to please your man then well, then its for sure socially unacceptable. Interracial relationships involving white men and black women......and speaking your mind when it goes against the norm.

Well, the big thing around here would have to religion. If you're not Christian you are a demon or whatever. I live in a small hick town along the Ohio River and every "crick" and "holler" has a little white church with a little white picket fence. Everybody in my high school goes to youth rallies all the time. It's a big thing... but that's okay...good for them. It's just if you're not with them, you're against them. Also, you can't be gay. I mean alot of my friends will joke around together (which isn't exactly PC :( ), but if you're really a homosexual, everyone will hear about it and you will become a pariah. It's all pretty close-minded.
The only thing that really isn't that taboo is your political preference. People like to say they're Democratic so they say they're open-minded and what-not while others say they're Republican so they can say they support family values and morals and such. Either way politics don't matter alot around here.

Much of the same.
Being yourself is definately taboo in my town. Sure you can be "different" like having a blue mohawk or dressing all in black (no offense to anyone) but being an individual without having to be the center of attention will receive much scorn.
Not being a hick or prep is taboo as well.
Gays arent accepted but they dont get picked on TOO much since most people seem so deathly afraid of them. Its the ones who are straight who get called names every four seconds. "shut up dude, you're a homo" to which they so cleverly retort "nuh uh, YOU'RE gay".

:( Here the taboo is ridin' Quarter Horses! I'm in the heart of Tennesse Walking Horse Country. The other major horse here is the Spotted Saddle Horse. And those of us who ride anything but are frowned upon. But when those folks who have gaited horses have cattle that they can't get up, or cattle that gets loose who do they call?

Most things go where I live. In fact people don't much care what you do, religion, politics, homosexual sex etc.
I don't know how controversial I'm about to be but here goes, the main thing which is still taboo is the practice of fetishitic sex between two consenting adults also domination/submission, bondage, S&M etc. It is still all lumped in with sex crimes. Silly really because they are actually the complete antithesis of each other. One is about two consenting adults exercising their free will, the other is about forcing people to do things against their will. I hope that eventually consensual sex in any form will just be assumed to be a part of a person's private life and not a indication of their personality. I really don't care what people do in the bedroom or who they do it with as long as no-one is being forced to do anything they don't want to do.

Well, I've discovered that keeping your mouth shut and minding your own business can be a remarkably effective way of earning people's contempt. It never occurred to me that such an outlook might be merely local attitudes. I just figured that was how people in general were. I never quite decided if minding my own business made me appeare snobbish, suspicious, cold-hearted, or what. I just thought I was doing everyone a favor by leaving them in peace and hoped that they would reciprocate. Knowing what I know now, that attitude was remarkably naive. Oh well. Live and learn (hopefully).
The overwhelming majority of people in my neck of the woods are Roman Catholic, due to French and Spanish colonization, and they're pretty cool. They don't proselytize or anything. They go to mass, say their Hail Marys and that's about it. Some of the older ones will end many of their sentences with the phrase "the Good Lord willing", which never bothered me. On the contrary, I think it's good if they have a close relationship with their creator, however they may choose to interpret that creator. Those Protestant sects we have tend to be fundamentalist/evangelical, with the exception of those very few Episcopals and Methodists we have. These fundamentalists occasionally act up, but they're hopelessly outnumbered by the Romans. I've never truly tested the tolerance of the Romans because I've pretty much remained in the broom closet for fear of repercussions for my family. If I lived alone I would happily take on the world, but I have a wife (Roman Catholic), kids (enrolled in a good Episcopal school), and mother (Episcopal), all of whom are heavily invested in the local society and culture. We also have a synagogue or two, and I know we have at least one mosque and a Buddhist temple, but I don't know where they are. We have a fair number of people from S.E. Asia in our thriving fishing industry.
I've never seen any outright crusades against the gay community, though most people around here a quite conservative, including myself, with the exception of religion and a few other areas! I've had a number of gay or bisexual coworkers and have had nothing against them and no problems with them. I just can't get that worked up about other people's romantic tastes (barring sexual predation, of course) and never understood those that do. I don't understand bi/homosexual urges, but then again I don't suppose I have to. As long as nothing is done against anybody's will, what consenting adults do behind closed doors is their own business. I've got enough things to deal with in my own life without taking on other people's baggage.
Good heavens, but this has snowballed into quite an editorial, so I'll shut up now!

Same old same old with relegion. Even believing in magic is wrong here. Not kissing the Oiler's arse. Being 'new family' (I don't have that stigma, thank goodness. My mum's side was the 2nd of the first 3). Black clothing, acting nuts, being indian and not a drinker (another I don't have, but I do notice), not being prep or hip or hick, not going to football games, writing poetry that's any good, not liking the town... plenty more.
