Should one create their own, or use an "ancient" alphabet? To me, i can see that the personal power involved in creating your own would be beneficial, but so would useing one that has been used for centuries, as there is more universal power involved.
What do you think? Your own or something old? Are runes in spell casting/ ritual important at all?
Thanks for your anticipated help...

Hey, good question. I havnt studied Runes to the full extent that I should... but to answer your question, generally there are several sets of preexisting runes. If you create your own, what would you base them off of, and how would you know if theyw ere valid?
There is the more famous and widely used Elder Futhark...used mostly in scandinavia.

There are also other regional forms. Mostly though if you want t use them in Divinition, I would say use the Elder Futhark.
There are others who might be able to answer your question better, there is another forum in the Paths section where you might be able to get information as well. As well as in the Divinition section.
Have a good one!

Many believe that the Elder Futhark is the most well-rounded rune row, and was developed as it was for special reasons by early rune masters. I'll try to post some more links as I remember them.

What are you attempting to use runes for? If you just want to do divination, people have devised many different methods of divination with their own symbols for it. The various rune rows have been used quite well for this task. If you want to make up your own divinatory symbols, go right ahead. They won't be "runes" in the proper sense, though.

There is a compromise. Use a traditional form, but make your own set by hand. A hand-made set of runes (especially if made traditionally) have more 'personal energy' than you can shake a lot-cup at.

Why not do both?
You can test both systems against each other
