I bought a beginner's deck over 5 years ago right before my son was born. And there they have sat on my bookshelf ever since. I had been reading up on your Tarot classes and decided to pull 'em out again. *blowing off dust*
This deck is a beginner's and has the meanings of the card, Dignified and Ill dignified, written on the card, but the pictures are pretty bland. I can't get much out of the pictures on their own, nothing like the decks you all have been sharing.
Do I keep it simple for now, and just work on learning the different cards and meanings or would it be better to get a better deck that has more detail and images I can read?
Chris, tends to get cnfused easily

The first thing I would do is surf the net and look at the many different tarot decks out there before purchasing one. Most sites have a card or four of what the deck looks like. Then purchase one you are drawn too. The most popular deck is most any form of the Rider-Waite deck. The pictures are rich and vibrant and full of symbolizm. Some people are very drawn to these, others are not. I personally perfer the Robin-Wood Tarot.
I feel that if the meanings are on the cards, you will have no ambition to learn the meanings of those cards. I had a deck like that once, I have given them to my son to play with.
To look at some decks, check out this site:

Most decks you will be able to order through a local bookstore if they don't carry it, or you can order them online.

Merry Meet,
I read your post and felt compelled to reply. I have always believed that the only meaning to the cards are the ones you create. My suggestion is this. First check out a site like aclectictarot.com and browse through some different decks. Find one whose images call out to you. You will know it when you see it. Then pull out a card, look at it absorb the image into your soul. Listen to what it is saying to you. Create a story from the pictures. That is your meaning for that card. Write it down in a notebook. Another good trick is to sleep with one card under your pillow at night and dream about it. When you wake up, write down the meanings from your dream

Great posts guys!!!
Merry Meet! great to have you here with us!! :D
Ill say the same as everyone else chryss, and recommend you look at as many different decks as you can and really go for the one that grabs you!
Then just spend some time looking at every card and connecting, meditate and leave them by your bed while you sleep. Read all the lessons here but more importantly follow your gut instincts on the cards ~ do they say anything to you? If they do follow what they say not the books explanation. Its really tempting to live by the book and the meanings but I promise you will learn so much more when you just go with what you see on the actual cards and what you feel in your heart!
Good Luck!!!

I couldn't have said it better Silver Venus!
A book interpretation may be way off from the impression you get at the time of the reading. Go by your gut, not someone else's! My other advice....through out the how to books.....or at least when you are doing readings, don't have the books anywhere near you! It's just too easy to look and say "oh, this card means this" and jump to the next card. You will never learn the meanings of the cards if you sit with the book infront of you. I keep a keyword chart with me in case I get stumped and can't seem to get anything from a card. But the keywords is just a jumping off point. And it's not a tool to lay out and read from, you'll miss too much that way!

Whew! I was over at aeclectic.com, looking at the beautiful decks and now I think I am more confused than before :)
It was weird, some of the decks really spoke to me, and some that I expected to absolutely did not. I love wolves and was excited to see a wolf deck. It was nice but not for me. And the Celtic Dragons- oh man, they were just amazing- they just blew me away. But I don't think they would be good for a beginner.
Even though the dragon ones really hit me, would it be better to get a more traditional or basic set, like Rider Waite or Robin-Wood? I liked both of those too.
Xois, if it would not be a problem, I would love to see the decks you have scanned. I saw some of them as I read through the classes. My email is chrisi01@bellatlantic.net

Dagda~ good point. And I think my son would probably do good readings with them as well LOL He is almost 5 and has "talked" to trees and animals and bugs since he was born. His favorite game is to pretend to be a wizard and make potions. He can add that deck to his collection :)
Thanks for the info. Now I know why those cards have sat on my shelf for five years.

Hun, Just go with the one that speaks to you the most ~ The more simple picutres, but still with lots of detail the better in my opinion but you have to really like them too ~ here are mine which are very easy to read from ~ (if a little box comes up just press cancel cos its in japanesse or some strang lingo..)
Secret Tarot ~ fashionable figures but in a really tradional way and very much like the Rider whaite.

Mystic Tarot ~ Greek gods and goddesses

Hope that helps you more :p
Cute about your son too ~ i bet you are very proud!! :D
