My best friend gave me a pendulum a while back and I never really knew what to do with it. I didn't know that pendulums were tools of divination! So I decided to put the gift to use and try my hand at divination. I have never done any sort of divination before. I plan on getting a tarot deck in the near future and practicing with that.
So with that said, are there things one should do before trying divination? By that I mean do you meditate first? Is there a type of incense you can burn to help clear your mind and such?

This is really up to you :) For startign out, I recomend using all the bells and whistles you think are meaningful. If that specific mendation, and lighting a particular kind of incense with certian crystals arranged about you while you have a concecrated cloth spread before you to work on.....go for it! :) Jsut remember that all your props need to have meaning for you. Don't just use them because some book /person says that's what you do.
As for pendulums, don't forget to ask it to show you a "yes" answer, then still it and ask to see a "no" answer :) You might want to do this every time as it may not always use the same motions.

also you may want to use the search function, here in dreams and divination you will find many threads, in fact my response below is copied exactly from another thread from about a week ago
ok a) RELAX! laughs
seriously that is step one
second -- your yes and no directions may be (and probably will be) different then your friends
simply hold the chain/string in your hand letting the weight just hang down
not moving, just hanging
then simply say yes, yes, yes (do NOT ask a question) until you kinda ground some into the word yes and let it show you what a yes will look like for you
then wait stop just hanging there no, no, no, no, no again until you settle into the ONE thing you are asking and that is show me a no
often it is just a matter of calming your energy enough, so that it can understand what you want
when it does not move, that means, not connected, no information, TOO much info
once you learn your yes and no then you can start asking ONE question at a time
be clear on the one question part
for example:
should i quit my job and move to hawaii?
that is TWO questions 1) should i quit my job 2) should i move to hawaii
love
