I had the thought that words and names have power my argument that power is the abbility to do work and the deff of work is to cause a change so when you say someones name or a few words do you not cause a change somehow or someway there fore i beleive words and names have power what do you all think

It's actually a pretty common magickal law that names have power. It's been said that if you can find a thing's true name, you can control it. And as far as words go, the same holds true. There are even words that hold amazing power that we don't know the meaning of, but the word itself is so magickal that just by uttering it, we cause a change in the universe around us.

hmmmm...interesting thought.i think words do have power, but it depends how you use them. you must put MEANING into your words.

Well, lets see if I can add...
Words do have power. I agree! But only when We Will them to be.
My point: A Word does nothing...unless we Speak it. Therefore...our Will to speak the Word...activates its 'Magickal' properties. Whatever they may be.

Do you think that we need to know what the innate properties of that word are? (Just getting philosophical...don't mind me)

You know...this is actually something i started thinking about when I posted on this last. It would seem that a person must have some understanding of the word to activate its Magickal properties. As I am sure you have studied...A.Crowley had several power words that were Kabbalistically perfect BUT just knowing that and speaking them..does nothing. You have to have an understanding of the basic properties of the word to achieve any result.
So let me rephrase...to Speak is not enough..you must Will...and to Will you must have a Purpose or Understanding.
Hmmm...philisophically right back at you..

I agree partly with mol regarding "speaking the Word" but I also believe that "signing" the word for those who cannot speak it is just as strong. In fact, perhaps, signing it might be even stronger. It would be a silent yet powerful message. I have been teaching songs to my Sunday school children for the last 11 years and when I teach them a new song I do the actions for specific words... Not only does it get the message across better for the little ones but it stays with them forever. Just my thoughts. Blessed Be. samoanshark

A great POST! Thank you very much...you know this reminds me a lot of the Golden Dawn and other very ritualistic systems of Magick. Not only do they utter very powerful words, but they also give signs as well. Which only adds to the power of the ritual.
My wife, semele, just added that when she seea a child give the sign of "I love you" she thinks it is much more special than just the words. Because small children really have to work to get their little hands into that position.
Anyway, enough rambling...lets continue..

I've also run across a lot of magickal documents that speak of words of power, however, that have no meaning to the human consciousness, that can affect just by being thought of and spoken. As in, someone without any prior knowledge could pick up the words and something would happen.
I actually had three of these words given to me in a dream once. I used them one day, and well, now I know what they do anyway.
I'm rather torn, myself on the whole topic. I think there are "perfect" words that can do just that, but that they're few and far between. Now where they come from and why they work? I'm still pondering that one...

Indeed it might be! I hadn't ever considered it. But signing is a way of ritualistically displaying a word, so it would therefore be saying the word with a ritual. Very interesting insight!
