Oh, wow. Well, it looks like you weathered the storm OK, though. Good job on keeping the animals comfortable.

What a mess!!! All your animals look so happy, though. I get a wonderful feeling from your pictures. One of homeyness and peacefulness. Ahhhh. Think of next year; it will all be sooooo green there in the flooded area!!!

Thanks Ssanf.

It was ok. Just a lot of work since it wasnt expected during good old dry August!
Now, we have another flood coming. The river should peak at 7pm tonight.
Where they water is going to go since we are still flooded from last time, we will see.

The river is expected to rise as much as last time.
At least we are ready since we have all the emergency pens still up.
Heck we got the herd back to their regular yard just 2 days ago.

I just am not looking forward to another clean up.
The flood waters really dump a lot of sludge and garbage all over.

Man do I wish I could send some of this rain your way.

Thanks.
We are thinking about the growth of flora yet to come. :)
I was wondering, since we only lived here 7 months, LOL, how the land reacts after its all over.
Heck, in between these 2 floods, grasses and weeds started to explode!
As the water receded, new growth was just exploding.

Since we live a an uncontrolled flood plain, I imagine nature thrives from all of this.
Heck, she is designed for it all here. :)

And the hay farms my hubby works at for our hay...wonderful!!
The rains have taken what was almost lost fields and rejuvenated everything.
We went driving yesterday to go look at the farms and its a green and wonderful again.
Even the alfalfa will be able to be cut one more time this year. :)

Our critters will have a good winter supply of hay. :)

I have got to get batteries for my camera tomorrow!
The forecast for this new flood is 8.9 on already flooded land.

Last flood in the pics was 7.1 on dry land.

This new flood is going to be a doozy.

well, like you said, at least you still have the emergency pens still up, so you'll be more prepared this time.
that's good that you'll have plenty of winter feed for the critters! thats one of the benefits of floods, all that 'sludge' you mentioned is full of nutrients for the flora, and, in time, for the fauna as well. it's nature's way of rejuvenating the area.
like many natural 'disasters', floods have a lot of benefits to them. it's only when humans try to interfere that they become disasters. critters know to stay away during this time and that when it's over, they'll have more than enough to eat and drink for quite a while.
looks like the critters are having a good time of it... lol!
lookin' forward to more pics!

Yup. And being able to witness these changes in nature is fantastic.
The way the flood planes go through the explosions of life is awesome.

Before the flood when it was dry, a lot of prairie type growth.
During the flood, wildlife was beautiful. Cranes, egrets, herons all came right into our yard.
Birds I have never seen before flew in to take advantage of displaced insects and other small life forms.
Snakes abound with full bellies.
Frogs, several different species were everywhere.
And fish were swimming in the pastures!

After the waters started to recede, the explosion of green was inspiring. Sudden birth was everywhere. The marshes that were once dry, just blossomed.
The grasses looked like a carpet of green.
The willow trees down there have got to be drinking till their hearts content. :)

And during the growing season when you look at the grass on the highlands compared to the grass in the low lands, wow what a difference.

The lowland grasses are a lot greener and a heck of a lot thicker. It amazes me how thick the vegetation grows in the flood plane compared to the highland that never sees flooding.

Thats all why I love living here. Its rough sometimes I know, but what nature does and how she manages is beautiful and inspiring.
I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

The mosquitoes could be taken out of the lifestyle though. Man are they bad!!!
I could do without them. LOL
But even get chewed alive every time I go outside and even inside once in awhile when some get in is worth it. :)

This is the kind of flooding that only happens every few years..... which makes it all the more spicial. A cleansing and renewal!
