Special case! Do your thing with the ruler. Then, tackle the little globe! I apologize that it is not a PLAIN ball, but I had this & it’s a very nice sphere. You can indicate the lines if you like - again, they are perfect for describing the shape of the sphere, as they are longitude lines. Just don’t get lost in the lines & forget the shading! ;) Also, blow up to fit, make contrast, etc. etc.

EXTRA CREDIT: COMPOSITION 2

Using shapes from around your house that are like the ones you have drawn, put together your own composition - taking a photo of it is helpful if you can, to post for me to look at - & draw what you see, keeping in mind both the principles of composition & perspective.

Just wanted to double check the e.c. We are finding a globe in our home and drawing that as e.c.????

Well, I've made a start on the sphere but that seems to be going worse than the truncated cone! Can we go back to doing boxes - I think I can just about do them now :)

I am sure that my eyes, brain and hands don't talk to each other because what I see isn't what appears on the paper

I seem to have a real problem differentiating light/shade vs colour - I have something of a fixation about this as I vividly remember my art teacher telling me that I was looking at colours rather than light/shade (and giving me 3/10!!!). I have to try to work out logically where the light source is in the picture because I just cannot seem to "see" it - any advice?

Can you de-colorize the pic? Maybe I'd better do it!

The light - well, you see where the WHITE is on the left? Then, it shades off & gets darker from there. Yes, differentiating between the COLORS & the SHADING is a VERY big part of what I want you to learn in the class! Keep trying!

Thank you!

I tend to do this from a logical perspective - ie, I try to identify the lightest and the darkest places first and then work on the rest rather than drawing what I see - is that okay?

I will also try to de colourise the picture as you have suggested - I had forgotten that I used to do that when I tried watercolour painting some years ago.

Thanks again!

Here's my sphere!

By the way, I LOVE my charcoal. It's very soft and dark.

Incidentally, we're starting to work on shading in Art 2, so my work has vastly improved. I still need an actual stump or two, though. :D So far I've been smudging with tissues and napkins.

I need to ask for an extension....

I found out some shocking news from someone in my life and it is taking
awhile to digest
Plus, my condition has been increasing because I haven't gone to the gym yet
this week
I'm asking for an extension but I might have it done later today if not the latest I will have it done is Monday

I hope to hear from you soon

Morrigan I have been using stumps with all of mine and I love them. The make shading soooo much easier. But if you dont have stumps q-tips also work well.

Do whatever works - EXCEPT, you really should be LOOKING at what you are drawing. It's tough, I know - but it's the only way to learn. So, I have to be this strict teacher & make everybody do what's hardest for them! :( Honestly, there are really no shortcuts, not if you really want to learn.

But do keep up your efforts! :D

...If you mean - just leaving out the places with the continents, I understand. Just try to look at that thing, & reduce it to what you can manage.

Glad you find that it works - I don't really trust it because it blows off the page so, but...

Your shading is a bit abrupt. There is a "hot spot" on the glbe because it is a little reflective (shiny), so what drops away from that is a somewhat medium-ish shade, going around into the darkest dark which you have. I think I want to see a little more gray in there! The hot-spot should be straight white, everything else should have some shading.

Doing great so far! :abanana:

Thanks for all your help and advice - I will keep trying.

Hope I understood this assignment properly - in the composition, I concentrated on the shapes we had already covered and largely left out the background.

Here are my latest offerings ...

I know I am getting this in right under the wire but I have had Mommy issues off and on all day and just havent had a quiet moment to get it loaded till now, and it is not even close to being as good as the others posted, but here it is.

You divided it into sections like an orange. I know that there are lines on it, BUT, haha - the shading is very dark along the right-hand side, there is a dark crescent; then most of the rest of it is very light gray, with a "hot-spot" of highlight on the left-hand side. The transitions from lighter to darker could be smoother. Well, you get marks for effort & I understand about "mommy-biz"! ;)

I thought when I was doing it that putting the lines in would make it better but in the end I was not happy with them. Instead of making the shading better it ended up making it look more choppy and drastic.

Slowly catching up.
Here is my sphere, I didn't do any lines and I don't think the shading is dark enough either. It looked ok on the paper but not as dark when I scanned it.

* I think that one is better.

Actually, I prefer 2 - 1 is so light I can barely see it!

Contrast, folks, contrast... ;)

It looked quite dark on paper, it was only after I had scanned it I realised how light it was.

That's what I was worried about with the pencils before we started.
