I like the Petersens Field Guide series. They have a Petersons Field Guide to Tree's, Medicinal Plants, Mushrooms, animals, birds..you name it :)

I use the Audubon Society's Field Guides but that is because that is what my Mom and Paw Paw have and I use theirs. I like them just fine but I'm not really aware of what other guides are out there.

The ones I use are more specific to my area. I would suggest checking at the local library or nursery & see what they would recomend for your area. The Petersons ones seems to have a good range in many different locales.
