View Full Version : What kind of a cleaner are you?

I was thinking while I was cleaning the kitchen, that the way a person cleans can show alot about their personality. I'm very meloncholic, meaning I'm laid back, not really a perfectionist, and I noticed this in my cleaning, I'd only clean the spots that I could see that were dirty, and if the counter did -look- dirty. I wouldn't clean it >.< how do you guys clean your house?

Side note: Yes this is a mundane thread, yes it had nothing to do with anything. No I'm not weird, I'm just bored!

I'm kinda a perfectionist, but if it *can't* be kept the way I like it, it's better off being messy... Though, right now (I'm proud of myself for this) I've kept my room neat for almost a week. :D

Sounds like a good way to get out of cleaning the house!!

First, I have to be in a "mood" to clean house. That generally means major PMS time, and DO NOT get in my way or heads will roll (hehe!!) When I do clean a room, it usually gets reorganized. My sig-o (significant other, that's the name my bf and I use for each other) can sometimes come home to a work in progress and no place to sit!! But when I'm done I don't touch it for awhile except to get the dirty dishes in the sink. Call before you come over 'cause the tornado has to come through!

actually I had just finished cleaning the kitchen which I -didn't- have to do, I only had to do the dishes >.< lol.

Sounds like a good way to get out of cleaning the house!!

Not always. :dis: As long as I can't see "stuff" around, then it's fine. (Disregard my messy closet, please)

OK - It's MY excuse to get out of cleaning the house! I'm just not in the mood honey ----

I don't clean house.....that is what I have roommates for. Kidding. I don't expect them to clean house.....it just happens that way because I don't leave any mess behind, and I'm not about to clean up after them (they are both boys....and, no offense, boys can be messy).

Now, my room is a completely different story. I have WAY too much stuff for one bedroom to handle. Ok, I'm a typical pack-rat. Needless to say, things get rather cluttered.

Anyway, I too, have to be in a mood to clean. My room can look like a tornado went through it and I can have a complete "whatever" attitude about it for days, then all of a sudden, no matter what I'm supposed to be doing, the room MUST be clean.....now. It's too weird.....or maybe I'm just too weird.

I'm a pack rat so everything is cluttered, but not dirty. I'm pretty fastidious about whether all my useless junk is clean. :p

yeah I got the sudden urge to clean everything in the bathroom today... I'll clean the entire house if I'm in the mood. But I absolutely refuse to touch -my- room until I have to >.<

Armitage, I have to ask this but -where- did you get that avatar? I love it!

Ugh! :blushake: The bathroom is horrible to clean! (One of my least fave places)

Heck, I'd even prefer to clean my room over the bathroom anyday!!

Fao: Tis mine. I drew it a while back (gods only know what happened to the original image) and was using it as an avatar on an RP-ing board. It kind of stuck.

I used to be a meticulous housekeeper and made everyone miserable. After years of working a stressful job with long hours and recovering from back surgery....my house went to hell in about 3 years......hopeless. A friend sent me this a few months ago and it has really helped get me out of CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over) Syndrome!

*smiles* I'm the same way Annika!

I'll go in fits and starts...sometimes cleaning every time I turn around, and other times when I'm too busy or not in the mood I'll let it go.
*shakes head* The house is a mess right now though, and I'm gone the next two weekends before I've got company coming, so it's probably getting cleaned tonight and tomorrow morning!

ps. I'll get you a letter soon, Annika, promise! :D

Was thinking I should have explained that site ~ it's called the FLY Ladies (Finally Loving Yourself). It's a personal mentor site that has daily instructions for tackling a hopeless mess......such as spending only 15 minutes a day, and actually setting a timer. The philosophy is that your house did not get dirty in one day and it's not going to get clean in one day, either. And - that you don't have to do it all perfectly......it's okay just to vacuum the middle of the living room - because "housework even done incorrectly still blesses your family....."

I don't stick to it on a regular basis but it's still helped a lot.....my house was so bad that I was literally letting it depress me. Currently, it presents at least the illusion of being clean....and I feel so much better.

I'm kinda picky. I guess that's why I'm a homemaker. I like my kitchen and bathrooms to be pretty much spotless. I also like the front living room to be clean, in case someone stops by. The den, I'm fairly unconcerned with, though I do like it vaccuumed regularly. As far as bedrooms go, I like them to be picked up, not spotless unless company is coming. My step-daughter does have to clean her room once a week, but she has to keep the floor picked up everyday. (That's her dad's rule, not mine. And it's mostly because she sleepwalks. Cleaning her room is her only chore, so she has to do that once a week in order to get her allowance.)

Between the ages of 20-24 I kept an absolutely spotless house. I think I was trying to nest or something. After my fiance and I broke up, I didn't thoroughly clean my house for a year. I'd wasted too much energy. Now I clean about once ever six months. I do it over a period of a week about an hour everyday.

I mean I clean out the bathtub and toilet, etc. I'm not dirty, just cluttered and unorganized. I don't have time to worry about it.

But I've also noticed that my medication has an affect on my cleaning. When I am taking my meds for anxiety/depression I clean like a freakin' maniac. When I'm not taking them (which I haven't for 2 years now) I couldn't care less.

I'm another moody cleaner. Most of the time, a messy house doesn't bother me much, but when it hits me, I clean nonstop until I'm done, and nobody better get in my way. I'm also a pack rat and have closets and even a spare room that I'm almost afraid to go into. I'd really love to get them cleaned out and organized, but that might be an ideal that isn't very realistic for me.

I'd been a pack rat for the longest time....but this past year I've gone through a major shift and been cleaning out things mercilessly.
Clothes I hadn't worn in years, books I never read, old trinkets and presents. (as my mother says "remember the person, toss the thing")

It's kind of liberating actually. :D

How did you get up the courage? I can't seem to start that process, and I need to badly..........

I'm not sure what a clean house looks like anymore... I have a two year old and a two month old. Clutter is the issue in our home. When the little one gets a little older, I'm gutting the place. I really have a strong desire to get rid of all the junk I have accumulated over the years.

I think with that and the purchase of a dishwasher, I can really cut down on the cleaning time. I'd clean the bathroom anyday over doing the dishes!!

I keep my house clean enough to keep the Health Dept. at bay.............Considering 4 big dogs in residence........It's actually pretty clean..............

For cleaning, I have a cleaning lady every other week, We started late in my second pregnancy and couldn't bear the idea of stopping. I am still the clutter queen, every now and then I loose something and maddly pick up clutter til I find the offending object. I generally star cleaning too, if angry and needing to vent some steam.

our house isn't so bad... well.. the house in general. When you get down to specific rooms....... well, that's a whole nother story.

Like my room.. can't see the floor, typical teenager I suppose. And the old computer room. Boxes we never unpacked from when we put pergo down, etc. >.< my mom's room is getting to be bad, but only because I put my clothes in there cause there's no place in my room.. gee wonder why.

I'm horrible. I only clean once a week because I work 50 hours a week with 2-5 year olds so by the time i get home at night I'm already 1/2 asleep. So on saturday I pull every peice of furniture out and scrub everything. I bleach the walls. My daughter thinks I may be certifiable

What kind of cleaner are you?

What kind of dumb question is that???

Garnet
June 8th, 2002, 07:11 PM
Hey, Illuminatus....there's no such thing as a dumb question (which I have to keep silently telling myself when I train someone because I have no patience for it...)

How do I clean? I'm the slob who asked (in the Rituals forum) for a spell to make me like cleaning my house. I hate, loath, & despise cleaning. I could live in absolute squalor as long as I can get into bed & the bathroom.
I'm trying a new approach that's working ...so far. It's the 'container a day' system. I have to get a container of stuff out of the way each day. Whether it's a load of laundry to the basement, a bag of trash to the alley, a box of stuff to the garage for charity pick-up, I get at least some stuff out of the 'open to company' areas. The bathroom downstairs, the room with the cats' litter boxes (& inexplicably, the basement) are clean, & the kitchen & the other bathroom are no longer scary.
My bedroom, on the other hand, is probably one of the reasons I never married.
When I win the lottery, I won't buy a mansion or a fancy car, I'll hire a cleaning person.

I thought it was a very interesting question. Everything we talk about doesn't have to be of major importance.

Wisdom can come from seemingly inconsequential things, so no need for sad faces or droopy ears.

I remember reading a long time ago, how we clean and keep our living area has a lot to say about our personalities.

My house is cluttered but not dirty. I try to do a little bit of cleaning every day. Try is the operative word here. If I don't, no sweat. The world won't come to an end. I really much rather be out in my garden or taking a walk by the river after dinner. I rather be online here (like now :D). Once in a while, I get into a cleaning mood...usually about twice a year...and do a major cleaning and reorganizing.

Not having a job where I have to go out of the house, I clean every day. We have four cats, and if I don't vaccuum, dust, sweep and mop every day, the place is overrun with cat hair, and dust. I do a pretty good rundown of the cleaning every day, but...special projects, such as cleaning the windows, scrubbing the tub, organizing, cleaning cabinets, relining shelves, the fridge, those things wait until the weekend, or until i'm feeling particularly industrious. (or bored).

I'm not too methodical about it. My husband thinks I should "nuke out" each room seperately. Meaning, clean the entire kitchen first. Then move to the living room, etc. But...This get's pretty boring. So what I do, is FIRST turn the music on. This is absolutely necessary for me to clean. I must have music blaring really loud! Then, The first thing I do, is just do any dishes left from breakfast, clean the table, the stove, and counter tops. Then, I'll take a break from that, and move to the living room. Picking up whatever needs to be picked up, or straightened out in there. Then I go to the bathroom, empty the cat box, clean off the bathroom sink, scrub the toilet. Then...I move to sweeping/mopping the kitchen floor. From there, I bring the vaccuum in. Do the bathroom first, then living room, office, and bedroom. Then, I do the dusting, put dishes in cabinets, make the bed, etc. So...basically, i break the chores up, instead of doing one room fully at a time. That get's too boring for my gemini tendencies :)

I get into "Spring Cleaning Modes" where I do all the windows, pack up things to put in the basement, clean the upholstery, all that kinda stuff that doesn't have to be done every day...but that's a rare occasion :)

When I'm making dinner, I try to clean my mess as I'm making it. In other words, put stuff back right when I'm done using it. Wash dishes as soon as I'm done with them, and when the food is cooking, etc. This cuts down on the after dinner clean up. If I don't do that..i wind up looking around the kitchen that I had just cleaned that morning, and becoming exceedingly depressed at the "Tornado Hit" appearance :)
