I saw this yesterday with my mom. While it didn't follow the book's story it was definitely one of the best films I've seen in a long time! And the best audience! Mostly female but I noticed the few guys that were drug in were clapping and laughing with the rest of us.
It was very funny and I cryed all through it, unusual for me. The Irish guy who played Connor was great, I could sit and listen to him all day long.....*sigh*
Maggie Smith and Ellen Burstyn rock! Sandra Bullock and Ashley Judd rock! Ya Yas rock!
Bring tissues, friends and get something yummy to eat after the movie!
My only peeve is WHO TALKS LIKE THAT? I've met maybe one or two "Scarlett's" who talk like that and they are affecting an accent.
*does not get the "Magnolia-Tree-Shoved-Up-Butt" movie accent*

I already made a pact with one of my girlfriends to see it as soon as it comes around.
Good to hear it was a good movie. :)

I'm ging to see it today at 4. I agree. The book is REALLY hard to follow and , quite frankly, extremely boring. I'll read just about any book you hand me and enjoy it and i just really can't get into this one. Can't wait to see the movie though. It got alot of bad reviews. I dn't care though, it's got Ashley Judd and Sandra Bullock in it so it's gotta be good.

I will see the movie when it comes aroud ,with my mother (which by the way we have that sort of relationship with each other) this should be good. :)

I think I'll probably read the book before I see the movie (now if only it would get returned to the library soon) :D

Well, most of my family does have pretty pronounced Southern dialect. However, I think Hollywood always over does it. Even so, Ashley Judd lives here, I met both her and her sister in odd places, they're pretty nice - anyway, she should know that is not how most of us sound.

This reminds me of what happened to Margaret Cho when she was starring in the television sit com, "All American Girl" . Did you know that they hired "Asian Consultants" to "Teach" her how to be "More Asian"?
Perhaps that is what is happening in the Ashley Judd scenario. Maybe they've been hiring acting coaches, or dialect consultants to teach her how to "Talk like a proper southerner". And just screwing the whole thing up. Oy.
Edited to add: On the topic of Hollywood trying to fix things that "aren't broke" (such as accents, and culturally identifying factors), One only need to read about Margaret Cho to understand how stupid hollywood really can be. Here's an article about her new comedy play/show, where she describes how hollywood almost ruined her life, because of things like this.

Okay, I just got home from seeing it and it was really good--but really sad. I cried all the way through it. After Earthcup's post this morning, I figured I was going to get really mad about the accents--but I hardly noticed them. They seemed really mild. They sounded like many people around here even and I'm not even in the deep south.
All I can say is Maggie Smith is so cool. She has the best one liners and she pulled them off really well :)

you guys ever notice how good movies get bad reviews, and bad moies get good reviews? I think the critics are whacked out and too full of themselves. So I've got a system going. The worse the review, the better the movie
(this is not always true, but most of the time)

I haven't seen the movie, but I loved the book. I don't understand how it could be hard to get through.. I flew through that thing in a couple of days. It was amazing. And it was a great bonding experience for me and my mom. :)

I KNEW I'd seen him before! *drools*
I loved both books. It was like reading about my own family which was weird..... I really love the movie. I may go see it again sometime this week.... :)
I've got a very pronounced accent normally myself. It's caused a few crossed wires when visiting my sister up north...
Movie accents bug me. Kim Basinger in "The Real McCoy" is my fave accented movie, up there with "Fargo" and "Spitfire Grill".
Julia Roberts is from Georgia but I noticed she had the "Scarlett" accent in "Steel Magnolias"..... weird.....

...I haven't seen the movie, or read the book. from what everyone here is saying, I will probably go and see it. And I also agree that some accents in movies are over done. I have a southern drawl (i live in western NC) and I really don't like it when i see movies set in the south and all of the characters sound like idiots...that just makes me wonder what i sound like. just recently i went to new orleans and there was a store there on burbon street called gumbo ya ya...pretty cool store. i wonder if the connection is a coincidence?

I don't know.... I got the term from the book myself... Have to look up that store if I ever get to New Orleans... my sis and I have been planning to go for years...

Of course, I loved their little rituals.....I'm gonna try that thing with the sparklers and make one of those headdresses....
I loved the humor and the older actresses reminded me of the group in Steel Magnolias, another one of my favorites. I also liked the exploration of the issues in the mother/daughter relationship and the positive way that it was resolved.
I'm definitely going to be buying this one.....ya-ya
