Going to Wal Mart is usually a pretty stressful thing for me. I don't like being around lots of people much but, being in a small town, Wal Mart is where I have to go if I want to get anything even a little out of the ordinary say, fresh herbs or papaya.

I usually try and get in and out as fast as I possibly can. I don't look at people, don't say excuse me when I push past them and grumble when I can't get down an isle because it's too full of other people. If I do take the time to notice, I notice they are all doing the same as me--ignoring.

But something happened the other day that was a little fun for a trip to the grocery store. As we were exiting the store, the older couple in front of me pushed their cart down the incline and their watermelon rolled off the bottom of it and into the road -- EVERYONE suddenly stopped ignoring. One man ran out into the road to stop an oncoming car and several people stopped what they were doing and took out after it. EVERYONE was laughing and working together and smiling at each other. It was just a simple thing and to anyone watching we probably all looked like idiots chasing after this green ball of fruit. But for just that minute, I got the message. People are supposed to work together. They are supposed to help each other and smile while doing it. It let me know that we aren't all as far gone as I usually think we are. It did my heart good and I wanted to share.

thank you for sharing that story. it is so much easier to just ignore each other, and forget we are one big family. and should try to work together . it's funner than doing it yourself

This story is so great! Not to mention the fact that to see the title of "The Watermelon" in the middle of "Hi I'm New" posts was hysterical!

Consider this story copied and emailed on...it is sooo worth sharing--thanks for sharing it with us! :D ;)

I always try to smile at strangers when I am out and apologize for bumping people and if someone has one or two things and I have a cart full I even let them in front of me if i have the time. I have found that although I have more than enough bad things happen something good almost always happens out of it. I truely think it is because of how I try to treat others. I am not always successful I have a horrid temper but sometimes my day is brightened simply by seeing a smiling face at the grocery store so I try to be that smiling face for others.

This story deserves a bump! I was smiling and laughin as I read!

In our small town we actually have a Super Wal-Mart and I used to be like you....although I still hate goin to Wal-Mart!
But, one day, after a very stressful day on the job, I had to go to the dreaded store and decided that on that day I would do something different. I would smile and talk to the folks in there. Granted some people looked at me as thought I should be in the nut-house (sometimes I believe them)....but when I checked out, the cashier who looked to be very ticked off was laughin when I left. I try to do that every where I go now....and at my bank the cashiers now actually act like they look forward to seeing me.

It's true that smiles are catchin'! :)

One day on my way home from school (I bike to and from school), I was really annoyed/depressed/generally in a bad mood. I was brooding, as I tend to when I have 10 minutes alone to think when I'm in a bad mood, and I stopped at a stop light. I looked into the car next to me, and the driver looked back at me and smiled. That one smile, from a complete stranger, made me feel so much better. It's incredible, but it's the little things that make all the difference in the world.
