From the Toronto Star today:

Women robbed in third weekend carjacking
In fourth incident, woman is assaulted, has car taken from mall lot

Two women were robbed at gunpoint and left locked up in a portable toilet Saturday night in Toronto.
Three males with guns approached the women in the "Green P" parking lot opposite Chester station on Chester Ave. north of Danforth Ave. about 10:45 p.m.

The women were forced into the back seat of their 1999 silver Toyota and their jewelry and purses were stolen. The women were then driven to two ATM locations to withdraw money.

The suspects then drove them to the Oriole GO train station at Leslie St. and Hwy. 401 and locked them in a portable toilet, in a materials yard off the GO station parking lot. The women escaped and called police.

The three males are all in their late teens to early twenties. One of the suspects has an oval-shaped face, is about 5-foot-7, 140-150 lbs, has a small build and was wearing a blue bandana over his face. He was wearing dark clothing and had a gun.

The second male was 5-foot-7, with a slim build. He wore a red bandana over his face and wore baggy blue jeans.

The third male is described as heavy set. He was wearing blue jeans and white runners and had a silver gun.

It was the third major carjacking incident of the weekend. On Friday night, carjackers assaulted a youth and a married couple in two separate incidents, stealing two cars, jewelry and an undisclosed amount of cash.

In another similar incident Sunday, around noon, a 50-year-old woman was assaulted by a man in the parking lot at the Sherway Gardens shopping mall, at Evans Ave. and The Queensway East in Etobicoke.

Police say the woman was hit on the head with an object and forced to surrender her car keys to the middle-aged assailant, who fled with her gold-coloured Saturn. She suffered minor injuries.

The attacker did not take the victim's credit or debit card, as was the case with the other carjackings.

Wow, that is scary. Please be careful and aware of your surroundings at all times. I remember right before I was married there were carjackings near where I lived. And I was travelling a distance back and forth to work. I was always looking in my rearview to keep an eye on all the cars. And I got car a car phone!

I have a cell phone, and the thing i love about my car is when you unlock it (with the remote) it only unlocks the driver side, you have to press it twice to unlock all doors. I always drive with my doors locked as well...
I am just a tad freaked out that so many happened so close over the weekend... this stuff doens't happen to this extent in Toronto really... :shaker: at least not in the good neighbourhoods...

I noticed while I was in the checkout line yesterday that Cosmpolitan has a good article about this issue. Tried to find it on the web for you, no luck so far.

I live out in the boonies and don't feel very safe when my son's not here. Currently, he's away visiting his dad and we decided to store his car elsewhere, as he has a very nice Mustang and I'm not here very much.....but it's obvious that I'm here alone.

I always look around my door for signs of tampering before I go inside. And I always try to let someone know where I am. This is something that we did at my last job since we didn't have enough staff to go out on investigations and clients' homes on a buddy system. We kept a written sheet on our desks with names, addresses and times. And we tried to always have someone walk us to our cars when leaving the building after hours.

I heard once on a talk show from a career burglar that if you're going to leave lights on when you go out, they should be the kitchen and bathroom lights because those are the rooms that someone might actually be in at 3 or 4 a.m.
