Ok, I'm feeling the energy sag too seriously here to be rectified. I think we'd better call it quits after this assignment (too bad - I was looking forward to color)!

Week F) SELF-PORTRAIT (!)

Ok, here we go. A LOT of you AREN’T going to be happy with this assignment, but it is a classic one which is taught in formal art training. YOU are the easiest model around, so take advantage!! :D
For this one, you will need a mirror. I must tell you all that it is FAR preferable to draw from life - photos are really very 2nd- rate BUT since this is an online class & we need to all be doing the same things, thus photos; also of course I must be able to see what you are doing for the sake of correction. Take advantage of your own availability to yourself - & draw the face.

DISCUSSION: ANATOMY

Well, we won’t get bogged down here - I just want to mention a few things about the face. #1: Remember that your eyes are NOT in your forehead!! :D LOADS of evolution gave you that cranium.

Divide an oval into quarters; remember that your eyes will be right about on the center line. Add hair LAST! Remember your darks & lights. CONTRAST CONTRAST CONTRAST!!

Your eyes are in SOCKETS; your nose isn’t flat! Eyelids COVER the eyes. You will see half lid, half eyeball - your pupils will be right up underneath the lid. Try not to get too distracted by things like eyelashes.

EXTRA CREDIT: YOUR PROFILE

Ok, for this you DO have to have someone take a photo. Or, if you can find one of yourself in profile, use that. If all else fails, you can use someone else’s profile - remember that you really should do it from life! (Say - you know, if any of you are clever with multiple mirrors, you MAY just be able to get away with this! :D )

Do not make the nose take over; equally, don’t let it disappear. The bridge will fall on your center line (oh - you did make your lines, didn’t you? :D ). THE EYE IS SIDEWAYS. You see the lid like a little sideways V - > - & the eye curves out in a half-circle. You probably won’t see a pupil (remember: OBSERVE!!!). The nose-bridge, again, juts out just from between the eyes. Lips are like a sideways W. The chin should be the right size to balance the forehead - NOT huge, NOT disappearing.

Ok, that’s all I can think of - but always remember to come to me with any questions you may have! :D

Now:

Once again, this will wrap up the class. I will give people 3 weeks MAX to turn in whatever they haven't; 3 weeks from today, without fail, I give final grades.

Thank you all for your participation! :smooch:

Please don't abandon us now :(

I have really enjoyed your class (even though it has been very challenging for a non artist) and you have helped me get over my long held belief that I would never be able to draw - thank you.

I will try to post the first part of the landscape tomorrow - or at least what I have done so far as I think I am going to need some help in sorting it out :(

I was looking forward to working with watercolours too - my father is quite talented in that medium (although he doesn't seem to have passed the gene on to me).

Thank you so much for all your hard work to date - I know that all of your students appreciate it.

:hugz:

We will see how everyone feels - I can only say that I was truly looking forward to the color portion.
