View Full Version : What can/should I do?

My son Quintin is sick with his very first illness that's not just the sniffles. He spent all day yesterday laying in my bed, watching cartoons as lethargic as heck (he's normally an energizer bunny). All day yesterday he had a fever between 99 and 101, that I gave tylenol for when it went over 100 (mostly because he was miserable and it breaks my heart to see him that way.)

Today I thought he was all better. His fever was gone, he had his energy and sense of humor back...he was just a bit stuffed up. Then when we got home from getting groceries he said he needed some quiet time (!!!) and layed down on the couch with a blanket for 1/2 an hour until he fell asleep for about 45 minutes. When he woke up I touched his face just in a caress and he was so hot, so I took his temp and it was up to 102. Gave him more medicine (which he hates). Hes currently miserable and in my bed again.

He has play school tomorrow. If he's feeling well tomorrow afternoon, is it okay that he goes, or should I keep him out because of the fever today? If he's sick tomorow should I bring him to the doctor? (the Tylenol bottle says if fever lasts for 3 days to see a doctor). Is there anything else I can do? I can barely get any food or water into him....

Any help is appreciated.

Fevers rarely last more than three days even if you dont treat them, but I would go with your mother's intuition more than anything. You know whats normal for him and if this is out of the ordinary for him as a sick kid, you are right to be watchful. If you see a doctor about this and you feel your mother's intuition is not being taken seriously, be more insistant.

Most "schools" will require that your child be fever free for a full 24 hours before allowing that child to return to class.

Sage had a low grade fever last sunday, then Monday really early am she had 103.7. we brought her to the pedi with a 100.3 fever monday and again tues when she broke out in hives. the pedi said that it was a virus and the hives were from her breaking her fever. she didn't get stuffed up, just tired and wanted to cuddle and sleep a lot. the pedi told us to do tylenol till she didn't temp high anymore and to increase the juice to bring her sugars up. She ate better at night than during the day, but wouldn't take milk.

I'd keep him home. Wouldn't hurt, might help. And you'd probably feel better too.

The thing is....he'd be devistated to miss school tomorrow. They have a field trip to the fire station and get a ride back to the school in the fire truck. I'll see how he is tomorrow, I guess.

Aww, I hope he feels better!

I'd follow the directions on Tylanol. If the fever lasts more than 3 days even when treated, and he doesn't seem to get better -- Take him to the doctor.

I would personally take him to the dr. To be lethargic with a low grade fever...tells me that there may be something going on...but then with my little ones..it was the only way we would know she had an ear infection.
I hope he feels well.

Check your school's policy on illness...here, they have to be fever free for a full 24 hours, to lessen the chance of getting other kids sick.

He's fine today.... completely back to normal. That's how he was yesterday, too, until 5pm. *shrug*
