Check out this quiz. It tells you how much land it takes to sustain your lifestyle. It's even more interesting to compare the quiz results if you make changes.

If everyone lived like you, we would need 1.7 planets.

**frowns** I'd prefer the actual eight acres of my total footprint to the postage stamp I live on right now.

I think the rest of the human race had better get hoppin', if they're going to colonize the other 6.9 planets they'll need to sustain 6.5 billion clones of me.

By the way..I found the conversions difficult. Not used to using meters, hectares, and litres. Heh. So I may be off on the Meters of my housing..or litres of gas. Though, we don't drive much out of a half hour distance, each way, most of the time, far less. I walk alot, Don't drive, Don't use public trans, since there is not a good system around me. Don't use processed food too often, Eat meat at a little over half the meals we eat. Live in an apartment building, with one other person. Generate a little less waste than other people on my street.

4.4 planets for me. That's depressing.....

and changing my lifestyle choices to the way I'd like to live got me: 2.5 planets.....

Changing it again so that I'd live closer to town and eat less meat gives me: 1.1

Wish I had five acres of my own....... :(

Interesting,

Well when we move I guess us taking up 8 acres of the 50 that is our part of the farm is reasonable :)

. . .WOW! Not bad for an american ;) Hey I've got an idea. . . .why need two planets? why not just get rid of the more annoying peoples. . . . *evilness* lol

How do they calculate all this, though? Sounds a tad fishey to me. Yes, we're destroying this planet, but. . . o.O where do they get these numbers from? Did you know that something like 85% of all statistics are made up?

 I dunno, to some extent the whole survey feels like "Shame on you for being middle class."

How dare I eat two servings or so of meat per week, own my own car and my own house? I can only be environmentally friendly if I share my house with two other families, carpool with five other people, and grow all my own vegetables in my backyard?

There's a word for people who live in those conditions: poverty.

Of course, I'm fully in favor of funding the space program. NASA needs to go out and find those 6.9 other planets and start shipping people off to them. I'll even volunteer to go first.

WandererInGray

*nods* I thought the same thing Phoenix....*smiles* (suprise, huh?) which is why I didn't bother posting my results. [they were a 5.8 for those who wonder]

Shame on me for living in the west....where I *have* to drive a car to work, because the public transportation sucks donkeys, shame on me for having running water, and electricity that I use, shame on me for working an 8 hour day and not being able to grow my own food.

I do what I can, I recycle, I buy recycled more importantly, I eat organic as much as my budget will allow, and do what I can when I can.
I'm not going to move into a dirty, crowded city...just so I can use the transportation system, walk to the grocery store and work, etc. *shakes head* It's not a logical solution.

Trust me, most of the people who frequent this board, *ARE* doing their best to living an ecologically responsible lifestyle. Sure there's always room for improvement, but don't let this "quiz" give you a beating for at least trying. It's more than a large chunk of the population does anyway.

:D That's my rant.

Well I took the test twice once answering truthfully and as I suspected I was a bad person to the planet. But you see I knew that going in based on who was conducting AND analyzing the results. Then I went in and took it again answering in the best Earth friendly ways. Vegan, no car always used public transportation etc. Guess what I still used too many resources! So we can surmise that 1. We are all bad. 2. The pole and its results are erroneous. 3. It is a fundraising scam for the pollsters. 4. The pollsters think we should all go away and leave the planet to the bunnies.
Actually it just illustrates that polls can and are routinely set up to get or elicit answers that fit a pre-determined idea or goal. Please remember that.

I have been blugeoned with a blunted survey!

%&*$$ 5 planets?

I have lots of complaints, no allowence for those of us who live in rural areas that lack public transit, the weather question only contained 10-12 cities none really representative of the climate in the Adirondack Mountains. New York City isn't anywhere close to our climate up here. (I chose Chicago, with reservations) I could go on and on...

Mine was 2.7 planets.
But then again, I was answering for me, not my household.
I say this to all ya'll who were talking about the poll not being on the money (and really, how many polls ever are?) but, I travel far less on a weekly basis than my husband because I work locally and he drives over 70 miles one way to work. In his work he also travels, so even though I don't fly....he does. And due to his taste we eat way more meat than if it were just me. (Not that I don't love my steaks and burgers....just that I enjoy veggies more than him.)

However, the real one (when I answered truthfully) was a depressing 4.2 planets. Methinks I need to move out of the city, although I bike almost everywhere and never use public transportation if I can help it. I'd like to be a vegetarian, but I'm not, so...

Wow. I took this quiz the first time, got 3.9 planets, and thought, "That... really sucks." Then I came here and read some of the posts about how the test is off, and it got me wondering. Me, of course, being the cynic that I am, went back and took the test as if I were from France, using the exact same answers or their metric equivalents, and got 1.9 planets. I ought to move to France!

But I think it really is because the questions are very general. I mean, it is a fourteen-question test. If they had fifty questions, even, the results would be better. Alas. Even if the quiz is a bit off, you can still see that the earth's resources are being stretched a bit. The point of the quiz isn't really to tell you your exact footprint, it's to get you off your lazy bum and start being environmentally conscious.

Witchy Cowgirl
June 18th, 2002, 07:20 AM
celticfaerie,
Your right, the point of the test IS to make us more aware of our
enviornment and how to better use the resources we have. Thanks for putting the main point back in front of us.

Eeeek. I'm ashamed to say what mine was. I thought I was doing okay because I'm nuts about recycling, buy a lot of my food at summer farmers' markets, & installed energy-efficient windows & furnace. I can't grow much of my own food. The back yard is paved & my lot is narrow so I don't get much sun. It must be living alone in a 3 bedroom house that makes me a baddie.
