View Full Version : Feeding a One Year Old?

Well, Midori is eating more solids now that she's one year old. I looked on the USDA website for a food pyramid to follow but as far as I could see, they only have them for 2+. Still, I don't know how much a pyramid guide would help since she's off the size charts for her age.

We're seeing her pediatrician in a few weeks and I'll run her diet by him to make sure it's all right. Until then, I thought it would be neat to find out what you all think of her diet and what you fed/feed your one year olds.

This is what she's up to eating in a day:

1 8oz bottle 2nd stage formula waking up and 1 before going to bed
Breakfast: Cheerios or other dry cereal, banana and raisins. Sometimes yogurt or oatmeal with fruit

Snack: chopped apples or grapes

Lunch: Peanut Noodles (cooked spaghetti with Italian veggies and peanut sauce) cheesy spirals with veggies, veggie omelet, chicken noodles soup, chicken veggie burger with mixed veggie side, curry rice,- basically something with a grain, protein and veggie source. She also drinks ~5-6 oz fruit juice with lunch

Snack: chopped bananas, raisins, shredded cheese or dry cereal

Dinner: Whatever DH and I have, chopped bite size.

She also drinks an additional bottle or two of water a day after meals.

Does this seem like a good and healthy diet for a one year old? I usually let her eat as much solids as she wants, sometimes she eats a lot at one setting, sometimes she eats only a little. She won't let me feed her though, she's way to grown up for that :smileroll

Which brings me to what do you all feed your kids? Do you let them decide how much to eat or give them a set amount of food? Do you still give formula or breastfeed? What proportion of their diet is breast/bottle and what solid? We've been feeding solids since 5 months and she's doing really well on what she's eating right now. Good pees, good poops LOL I think it's fun coming up with things to make for her and I really enjoy feeding her. It is nice to get feedback from what others are doing though :D

Also, do you all have any recipes to share that your kids really enjoy?

I have no advice, though looks like you eat healthier then we do . But curious, why still formula? Do you plan to switch her to milk and if so when?

Mine is only 8 months in a week. I think I may drop his solid food down again (he was getting cereal in the morning, 1/3 jar of veggies for lunch and another 1/3 for supper) to make sure he gets his formula (he was easily drinking 24oz a day, suddenly he doesn't seem to want to). He loves his solids and would probably eat more but more tends to make him gassy.

I would be careful with anything with peanuts..as they are a food allergen. However..if she has had it and no reactions it may be ok...but run it by her dr.
By a year..I think they can eat more people food as I call it. Gerber makes really good bite size meals and pasta's with meat, veggies and/or cheese in them. But it sounds like it is pretty balanced.

Her diet sounds pretty good to me. My kids were on whole milk at a year and they did not get raisins until two years old. But otherwise they ate similar things. =) Bain's faves were grilled turkey & cheese and turkey taco meat.

At one year, mine were all still nursing, but eating a variety of solids well too, so I didnt worry much about it. I was still their main source of food, supplemented with whatever the rest of the family was eating anyway. I am a bit of a health freak, so what was on offer was mostly health fare and I felt comfortable letting them choose from what was available.

Thanks for the input all!

I wish I would have been able to nurse her, but I doubt I'd still be doing it, she has four teeth on the top, three on the bottom and two more on the way (OUCH!)

We first tried peanuts at about 11.5 months old, at our Dr. suggestion, we gave her a tiny tiny amount on the tip of my pinki. We don't have any history of any food allergies in either of our families, and she's been eating them with no problems ever since. But definitely, definitely I would advise anyone to talk to their doctor first before introducing peanuts, it's just so scary!

We still give her formula because when we tried giving her whole milk when she turned one (she's almost 13 mo now) she had a bit of diarrhea. I called the doctor and he suggested giving her second stage formula for a few months and then switching to whole milk in staged. Hopefully this will help make the transition easier. Now I so wish we had gotten a goat in the spring LOL. Milk is really expensive!!

It's good to hear it seems like an OK diet, I know I'm a little paranoid about these things. It's just so crazy to be so very responsible for the well being of another human being.

My one year old is still a 'nurseling', so Im the main food source...he eats whatever we all eat for the meals of the day. Overall, the diet you have for baby looks good.

My little one is only 9 1/2 months old right now, but her diet looks similar (albeit with more formula feedings and she eats a lot of jarred food still) to yours.

When you do try whole milk again, you might try introducing it slowly and mixing it with the formula -- her body might handle it better.

Whenever I give baby some juice, it's actually only a little bit of juice, and mostly water. But she's younger and I don't think 5-6 oz. is bad anyway.
