Hi All,
I'm interested in learning specifically about the local Gods and Goddesses of the Sussex area of England. I've tried Googling to no avail. Does anyone have any key word ideas, or any info to share?
Pardon my ignorance, but a newbie needs to start somewhere.
Thank you to any who take time to reply:spinnysmi

hello.
I'm not local to that area exactly, but like most places in the south east of England, what we now call the Celts inhabited it before the romans, and after them it was one of the places the Saxons first landed, according to the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Sussex), so that might be a direction to head in for a start. I suppose for any purely local gods/goddesses that may have been worshipped, you'd have to go back before the Celts, and I don't know whether there'd be any record surviving of what there may have been before then. Just maybe, if you could find anything about local archaeology or something, it might give a clue, but i think probably the Celts would be the first there'd be any record of.

Apparently Thursley in Sussex means Thunor's grove (according to Channel 4's Time Team web site).

Try looking on the Roman Britain site:
http://www.roman-britain.org/main.htm
It has lots of information on altars found around the country, which will give you an idea of the gods of the Romano-British era. Not the most easily navigable site, but very informative when you find what you're looking for.

Spend some time with a good large scale map of the area and see how many ancient sites you locate. Look up archaeological records to see whether any of them have been excavated and whether anything with a possible ritual purpose was found.
The Roman website sounds good, but bear in mind that the Celts tended not to have representations of their gods before the Romans came along - you'll need to try to eliminate any "Roman interpretation" where names are concerned. Most divinities would have been local in scope and particular to the tribe that inhabited what is now called Sussex.
