My local paper ran this story today regarding the current environmental movement and how it's become big business and big bucks for many of it's leaders.

Very insightful article, thanks.
I became disaffected with the Sierra Club long ago, but the Nature Conservancy I still support. They actually accomplish something by setting aside habitat, I think. I haven't been involved with the Audubon Society, but it seems they may do some good, especially when they do stuff like take on the Cattlemen's Association (IMO cattle ranching is one of the biggest blights on our environment). Then again is their effectiveness commisserate with their coffers. I guess I always assumed the people working for these organizations received average, but adequate recompense. I was obviously wrong. This is ridiculous:
"Salaries gobble up money raised, too. In 1999, top salaries at the 10 largest environmental groups averaged $235,918, according to IRS tax forms. By contrast, the president of Habitat for Humanity, International -- which builds homes for the poor -- earned $62,843. At Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the president made $69,570."
