View Full Version : An allergy? or stomach flu?

Yesterday I was shopping for a present and card for my son's birthday party tomorrow. I was browsing the cards and Cameron coughed a little, which I ignored, and then the next thing I knew, he threw up all over. He was completely soaked, it went through his carrier, all over the cart and puddled on the floor. I used all my wipes just cleaning the floor, and I had to wipe him down with paper towel in the bathroom. I ended up buying him a new shirt because his was so soaked.

After getting home at 3, he had about 4 diarhea type poops (he usually goes only once or twice in a day). He kept his dinner down, but he woke up crying at 10:30, completely soaked (didn't keep down bed time bottle)... Hubby changed his clothes and I changed the bed. When he woke up fussy at 7am his blanket and jamies and part of his bed were cold and soaked, so he didn't keep his 3am bottle down well. Then, just a little while ago he had a big bout of diahrea while playing on the floor...it leaked out the top of his diaper and got on my carpet. sigh.....

He kept his breakfast bottle down and seemed to be doing alright with lunch, so I decided to give him some barley cereal. In the past it made him gag so I held off on it for a few weeks....started it again yesterday. Within seconds of his swallowing the first bite he vomited up the entire contents of his stomach. Then it hit me, the times he was sick yesterday was approximately 2 hours after he had the barley....lunch and before bed. I read on some site on allergies that food allergies often present 2 hours after ingestion.

I"m going to make an appointment with our family doctor and see what he thinks, but in the mean time, has anyone else had an allergy present as vomiting and diarrhea?

That is too much of a coincidence to ignore at the moment.

I'd stop the barley until you talk to the doctor.

In fact, I had never heard of barle being used as a food, other than in beer, but that's me.

Definately get a doctor's opinion.

I'd stop with the barley cereal. He might not be ready for it, or it could be an allergy. Definitely speak with the pediatrition, they might run a few tests to be sure it's not a stomach bug.

Poor bugaboo though!! We just got over a stomach thing with Finn last week... it was awful. I actually paid my brother's girlfriend to hose him off after one of his exploding diarreah diapers, mwahaha (can we say birth control anyone?). I hope he feels better soon!!

Im certainly staying away from it until the dr figures out what's going on. :)

I doubt its an allergy, but anything with fibre is going to be too hard on his stomach. I am not sure what is recommended for babies who eat formula because its a milk product and when they are barfy, I know you are supposed to avoid those. If your doctors office is closed for the weekend already, I would call a hotline (do you have telehealth out west?) and ask how long to take him off the formula to let his stomach settle. You have my sympathy....especially since its likely going to hit either you or Quintin next :(

Not sure but barley cereal is a no go here. In our case it caused the opposite - constipation and gas. We stick to rice and oats.

Poor kid :(

Is he still hydrated (making pee, wet looking eyes and mouth)? Id be worried about him getting so depleted from all the loss of fluids and electrolytes..poor baby. Its so hard when they feel bad. My little ones always look so pitiful when feeling sickie, it just makes your heart ache for 'em.

Yeah, besides the vomiting and diarrhea he is perfectly happy, energetic....seems to be hydrated. We have health link over here, Ceres, that I can call and ask. I'm going to wait and see how he handles his bottles without any cereal. He's been keeping down his last bottle for an hour, so we'll see. If it comes up then I'll call them and ask.

I see your last post was made yesterday. So I was just wondering how he's doing now? Feeling better yet?

He hasn't been throwing up, but he still has some diarrhea.... he's had two episodes today....well, he woke up with poop up to his armpits, and then once late this afternoon.

He hasn't been eating as much as normal (4oz, as opposed to his usual 6oz), and last night he slept from 8pm - 8am (first time every, he's been waking twice at night for the last month), without asking for food. He did wake up grumpy at about 2:30, but refused food and went back to sleep after I put him in his sleep sack. (I had decided to try him without it last night).

I've been feeding him unflavored pedialite this afternoon, when he'll take it. If he still has diarrhea on Monday, he'll be going to the doctor.

Alrighty..... baby is going to the doctor first thing tomorrow morning.

While he was okay yesterday, he threw up twice today, still has diarrhea and was barely wetting diapers today. He's also started refusing to eat. When/if he does eat it's only 3 oz, half his normal amount. He didn't keep down his noon bottle or his 3:00 one, and then refused to eat until bed time (8:30). Even then I had to trick him....get him sucking his soother until he was almost asleep and then sneek the bottle in.

It has me very worried....

Poor baby!! How is he feeling?? I have heard that pedilyte is what they suggest..and sometimes water to get fluids into them. I hope that you are able to find out what is wrong. :hugz:

Healing energies sent for little Cameron, and coping energies for his mommy - and healthy energies for the whole family in case it's a virus. :hugz:

Update:

I took Cameron to the doctor this morning... he examined him and said that he did indeed have a viral infection (stomach flu), and he was slightly dehydrated. Because he hadn't had a pee in 24 hours, and my town's hospital is not equipt for pediatrics, he sent me to the Children's Hospital in the city.

So, we went to the hospital, told his story to the nurse, resident and pediatrician. We had to stay for observation for a couple of hours (dr wanted to see how well he would eat, and if he needed medical intervention for his dehydration). After observation (during which he drank 4oz of formula), we were sent home with instructions to return if he didn't pee in another 24 hours or his dehydration worsened (she gave me signs to look for).

On the way home he threw up the bottle he drank while there.... during dinner he had some diarrhea, and after dinner he threw up his dinner bottle. Sigh..... the doctor said the flu is worse at 3-5 days...today is day 5, so lets hope tomorrow is a better day, and he doesn' have to go back to the hospital.

We were out of the house from 9:30am to 5:30pm, and I didn't get anything done that needed to be done (including a speech pathology appointment for Quint)... I really don't want another day like today.

Sounds like a viral infection. Kailey had this on Monday night last week and she threw up every thirty minutes for 9 hours. It was hell :( My neice then got it on Thursday. Both girls are still working on getting their appetite back and they still have diarrhea.

Just make sure he's hydrated with water or pedialyte.

Sorry you're all having to go through this - sure hope the rest of you don't get the same virus. Healing energies on the way to you. :hugz:

Throwing up is also a sign of dehydration. I'd be sure to give him lots of water until this flu passes.

Doesn't it just break your heart when the little ones puke? Every time one of my kids were sick in that way I'd just cry and cry every time they puked. I guess the 'action' just looks so much worse on young kids. My youngest is 8 and I still feel incredibly sad when he gets a stomach bug. He immediately turns into a four year old. "Mommy, will you please come sit with me in the bathroom?" Who wouldn't cry? LOL
