I know there are allot dyed stones out there...... How can you tell if it's a dyed stone? Are there test you can do?
I would rather ruin a fake than think a fake is real.
Thanks! :)

there are not that many that are dyed. Although howlite is one stone I found that is currently being dyed the most. then you have crackled quartz or magic crystals(see more info on this in the data base). which is not only dyed but cooked or heated. also some onyx stones are dyed as well.(again see the data base). then you have what you would call fake stones . usually these are the fossil stones such as amber and jet.

what lightdragon said.. as far as identifying fakes.. that really depends on the individual stones and varies greatly... some you can tell pretty easily at most times with the eye (citrine which has been heat treated) but which there are no sure scientific methods to do so. Others, like amber, have many methods of telling fakes from real stuff both scientific and non... and still others can only be identified by scientific processes.... like I said.. it really comes down to the individual stone and in which manner they have been manipulated.
I always find it amazing that the one which is manipulated probably most often and which has the most tests available to identify fakes is also the one people get duped on most often... amber

How do you tell fake amber?
I can tell the plastic, but what else do they do? resins?
