View Full Version : A Question About Reading For Children

Ok...I know I'm gonna drive y'all nuts with these questions, but I was browsing some of the past threads and saw a question about reading for an infant, which made me think of this.

My son wants me to read for him all the time. I've only done it once, because well...it just feels weird.

How do you feel about reading for your own children? Wouldn't I be too close to the situation? The first reading was pretty accurate, but he didn't like the answer. He took it almost as if "I" was the one telling him, not the cards he drew.

What do you think?

I feel the same way. My son keeps asking me to do a reading for him but I just don't feel comfortable doing it.

I've never done a reading for someone face to face before, but I'm sure if my brother asked me for a reading I'd feel kind - of wierd doing it. It might go away, it might not, I'm not really sure - will have to try and see. ;)

Edited to add on.... If *young* children (like still in elementary school) asked me for a reading, I probably wouldn't though.

My son is pretty young...Heck, he's still my baby...and yes, he hates it when I call him that.

He's 12...He's actually pretty "gifted" himself. I was thinking about getting him his own deck and then he could read for himself.

Good or bad idea?

I think it'd be good to get him his own deck if he understands that each of us often find it hard to read for ourselves or those close to us.

That's how old my son is. He's 12 too. He's starting to get more and more interested in what I'm doing. He's always accepted things because he was brought up that way. I've been looking through aeclectic tarot to see if what "kid-friendly" decks are available. I seem to remember Yvonne said her son has the baseball ones.

I don't have kids but I think about my friends children and I think that while it would be okay to introduce them to the cards, I wouldn't actually do a reading for them. Because I imagine what would happen if I were to see something not so favorable . . . I just don't think I could maintain objectivity with a child. Maybe that's unprofessionalism or inexperience on my part but -- there it is :D

I think you're right, Mithrea. I think I would have a hard time being objective if I found something unfavourable.

I don't read for children.

I don't want to read for children.

I was hired to do readings for a medieval faire at a private high school once, and I kept getting the younger children of the teachers for subjects. Children under 12 or thereabouts are not 'into' this stuff -- they think tarot and Wicca are what they see in 'Charmed' or 'Buffy' and have no concept of what you are doing other than what Hollywood has instilled in them.

On the other hand, is you have children in teen years who are interested in tarot, perhaps buying them their own deck to use ( with groundrules) is not a bad idea. ( "Do not take your deck to school; do not read for your friends to make them think you are 'cool'; Do not try to impress people with your cards")

I have done readings on my son several times...not to give him answers so much as myself. He is only six and he loves my cards. I will prolly get him his own deck very soon. Every time I let him hold or browse through my cards he pulls out the sun and separates it from the rest! HHHMMMMM!!!

If y'all do happen to know of any really teen-friendly decks, I would be very interested in hearing about them.

My son is really into mythical things...I mentioned to him that there was a Dragon deck, he seemed interested in that. But, I didn't know if it'd be too hard for him to interpret or not. I've heard of religious based decks...He's also very into angels and archangels.

Thanks

Now I beleive I posted this else where but My grandma is the hereditary card reader in my mothers side and she refuses to read anyone under 18.
She always said that the future was to open at that point for a reading and something about changing the fates....

You might want to get him to look over a few decks to see which ones he's really drawn to. :)
