Okay, bear with me, I am a beginner with Runes. I have been reading some and I've read as many threads as possible on this but I haven't found the answer to this question. That doesn't mean it's not there, that just means, I can't see it ;)
What makes one bindrune more powerful than another? I see often Rick will say something like, "that is a very powerful bindrune" but I don't see why it is more so than any other. Is it the number of runes included? Is it the placement? Is this something that I will come to recognize with further study?

Hmm... good question...
It's not necessarily the number of Runes included, nor the placement. It's which Runes are included... certain Runes compliment each other... others don't... examples: a BindRune using Sowilo, Raido, & Dagaz would be powerful because each of these are solar Runes... Sowilo (the Sun) & Isa (Ice) would NOT be a powerful BindRune (unless your intention is to create steam :D )...
As to the number of Runes, repetitions of certain Runes enhance that Rune's strengths, but you don't necessarily have to bind them, just repeat them (this is a part of the concepts of Runic formulas)...
Yes, if you continue to study Runecraft, these are things you'll come to recognize...

Ah, Okay Thanks Rick. I will continue to study :) At least I'm to the point where everything you said made sense. :)

Rick, can we convince you to do some lessons on creating your own bindrunes? :D

...ya know, if someone tells me what they're trying to accomplish, I can usually come up with a BindRune or Rune charm for it... but I don't know if I can impart that to someone else... I don't know if it's something that can be 'taught' by (or to) another, but rather something each person has to come to understand on their own, through immersion into the Runes...

:D By being obsessed with, & consumed by, Runes & all things Runic... by setting aside all other magical studies for the moment & focusing on one goal, that of grasping (you'll notice I didn't say 'mastering') Runic principles... to know as little as I know today, I spent about five years of thinking I was studying Runes, then one year of extremely intense study of basic Rune Lore & Tradition (to the exclusion of virtually everything else in my life, & in which time I very nearly lost what little sanity I ever had), & then about four more years of somewhat more advanced study of Runic principles & formulas... I am no Rune master, doubt seriously I ever will be... the number of true Runemasters in the U.S. can be counted on one hand; in the entire world, there are probably less than fifty (this is, of course, only my informed opinion, but I believe it to be true)...
Hope that helped...

Thank you rick.
And seeing what you mean I can understand why few people could do it for a long period of time

I'm trying to come up with one for my car. Something to protect the traveler from accidents and to keep the car from breaking down. Something for a safe journey. So far, I've got Raidho but wondered if I should repeat the same runes or use different ones. And if I repeat it, how many times is good? I was thinking of 5 and arranging them in a circle with the top part touching each other. Love to hear what you think of this, Rick.

OK, I hope this makes sense (sorry, I don't have a scanner)... this is four Raido's (back-to-back, & top-to-bottom)... it also forms (among other good things :D ) two Algiz's (Valkyries, "guardian angels", divine protection)...
Using five Raido's would be very good, too... nice Runic formula (Raido is the fifth Rune)... you could bind them, or simply write/draw/carve five Raido's in a row...

Hmm....I like this one. I can also see 2 Berkanas in there too. Thanks, Rick! :D When I had done the 5 with the tops touching, it looked like a squashed spider.

I'm not sure about the terminology but when you say 'bind' do you mean when all the runes touch to make one symbol? As opposed to writing them out in a row next to each other?

If I understand it, it's a little more "spiritual" than that (for lack of a better word) but yes, basically.
There is a little bit about it here: http://www.earth-dancing.com/bindrunes.htm
I think of binding as superimposing, but with power.

Thanks, Mithera. I forgotten about that link. I'm going to re-do the charm bag I have hanging in my car. I usually like using herbs in conjunction with runes and other things. At the moment, the bag has an algiz embroidered on the outside. But I think my car needs a bit more now. Heh!
