Okay, I read this somewhere but I don't remember where (again!). I read you should only use candles that are free of scratches for ritual work. All of my candles have scratches and I will only go and buy new ones when I want to cut symbols into the candle. I can't seem to keep them scratchfree so if I am just using the candle for the color correspondence. I will use a scratched one.
Would you use a scratched candle?

I would. To me it is only a tool.I send the magick.

I would too...I agree with the fact that it is only a tool. I've even had a darker color rub off onto another candle, but I focus on the main color, the one that I intended on using and have never had any problems.
If it makes you feel better try rubbing the scratches out. Not literally, but I guess what I mean is to psychically (sp?) clear the candle of the scratches.
I actually broke a taper once and using my lighter I sealed it back, while I did it, I just imagined that the candle was being completely "healed." It must have worked...
This is just my opinion, I'm very much a fledgling, so don't necessarily take my word on it, but I have never had any problems with scratches or breaks.

I scratch candles purposely--to carve runes into them. **Smiles** If the scratches bother you, carve them into something that works well with your majick.

I think it's a matter of personal preference. Though finding unscratched candles can certainly be a pain. I don't have any problem using scratched candles. I agree..the candles are only a tool. It is me who works the magick.

Depending on how badly the scratches are, you can gently buff them out. Use an old nylon stocking piece and polish the candle. You can always consecrate your candles to your magical purpose to make sure they're truly clean. I use mostly beeswax candles and they are really soft & easy to scratch. I don't worry about a few nicks here and there.
