View Full Version : I hate my house

I think I just really need to talk... and maybe a hug or two.

Last spring I was so excited because my husband and I were finally going to get a house of our own. There weren't many on the market because it was JUST before the housing market crashed. I convinced my husband to by this because I thought it was our best option. He didn't really want the house but we needed to be out of our apartment in less than a month. It was either this house or rent for another year.

I wasn't about to spend another year next to our hellishly loud neighbors, so we had the inspection done and found that the water pressure was low and the furnace was old. Our realtor advised us to ask for a new furnace and forget about the low water pressure. She insisted we probably just needed a pump for our well. So we got a new furnace put in and bought the house, a few months later the housing market died and our house is now worth about 20% less than we paid for it. Houses that used to go for 100K here are now sitting on the market at 80. We had a plummer com out to see what was wrong with our water pressure and she informed us that we'd need a new well. 3000 dollars later, our water pressure is great. So we had to pay for a new well, at least our furnace was in perfect new condition right? Well, mid summer our house was hit by lightening. We saw the sparks come through the light fixture on our kitchen ceiling. Luckily I had unplugged everything electronic before hand- except the furnace. How was I supposed to know that a furnace has an onboard computer that can be fried by lightening? Well, we didn't find out that our furnace was cooked until about a week ago. Luckily we have insurance but the deductible is 1200 bucks. So now we've spent 4200 dollars on this stupid house, just making it livable and I'm so angry and sad right now. I didn't believe that lightening could fry a furnace but the repairman showed us it when he brought it out of the basement, the circuits were all melted and black. I wanted to burn the rest of it :bad:

And I like our house; it has big oaks and two acres, wood floors and a big hearth and fireplace. But our savings are wiped out after paying for the deposit on the house and the well. We had to borrow money to even pay for the stupid furnace. I'm so mad, I just feel like we're doing everything wrong and getting punished for it later. I wish we still lived in that crammed little apartment now :sniffsnif

It's been a crappy week :sadman:

I'm sorry for the string of bad luck. What you're going through now will make you appreciate the home all the more when things turn around. I wish you the best of luck in everything with your home.

Oh hon, I'm sorry. Houses can be so frustrating and money-consuming. They can also be fantastic refuges, when they aren't making you crazy.

Sending lots of energy and good wishes for strong foundations for all involved.

Thanks guys, you are all so sweet! I feel better already :D I think I'll go do some work preparing the garden for fall, maybe it will help remind me it isn't all bad.

A garden is a great idea. It's a way to make a space your own. Gardens are a great way to bring you closer to the land around you.

Sorry for your bad luck with your dream home. Gotta say though, it was lucky that you didn't loose your furnace in the dead of winter... yeah, like I did. AND it was Thanksgiving weekend. I was really lucky to find a guy who would come and put in a new one before I froze to death, and I guess I was lucky that I had just inherited a couple of thousand from my mom's death a couple of months before and could afford a new furnace.

Anyway, I hope nothing else happens before you can get back on your feet financially so you can really appreciate your new (to you) house.
