Familiars

I was wondering...How can you tell if an animal is a familiar or not? It seems that my cat knows me very well, I know that pets are just sometimes like that. But Kelli, always wants to be right next to me whenever I'm trying to read or meditate. When I've been upset about my boyfriend...She insists on sleeping on his pillow. (Much to his dismay...lol) Now that things are better with him she's back to sleeping on/beside me, and not on his pillow.

I just don't know much on the subject and was wondering if anyone had more information on it.
