Support for breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is certainly good for infants. But is it bad for a mother's figure?

Apparently not, according to a new study that dispels the old myth that breastfeeding contributes to sagging breasts.

In the study, led by Brian Rinker of the University of Kentucky, the researchers assessed 132 women who had come to the university's medical centre for a breast lift or implants. The average age was 39, and 93 per cent of the women had had at least one pregnancy.

The study showed no difference in the degree of breast ptosis (the medical term for sagging breast) for women who breastfed, compared with those who didn't.

But the researchers found several other factors that did contribute to sagging, including age, the number of pregnancies and smoking.

"Smoking breaks down a protein in the skin called elastin which gives youthful skin its elastic appearance and supports the breasts ... so it would make sense that it would have an adverse effect on the breasts," Dr. Rinker said in a statement released with the study at a conference of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons

Yep, pregnancy hormones. As evidenced often by the increase in size during pregnancy.

I couldn't argue it when I went from 38DD to 40H while pregnant.

I've already got a half size cup increase on each, but my happiness (Mine aren't very large to begin with) is dampened by the fact that I'm getting stretchmarks on the undersize of each breast. I'm so doomed when it comes to stretchmarks. I figure there's no point in me fighting them so I better find some way to enjoy them! But it is good news for me that breastfeeding won't cause them to sag any further because I absolutely canNOT afford formula and I'm intent on giving breastfeeding my all! (not that the idea of saggy breasts really horrifies me that much anyways... I mean who other than my future husband is really gonna know? I can always buy a pushup bra...)

I can always buy a pushup bra...)

Lol, yup! Plus, since breastfeeding offers protection from breast post menopausal cancer, it increases your chances of having breasts to put into the push up bra

Excellent attitude to have IMHO. A million reasons why it's worth having a few lines that'll fade and be barely noticeable anyway.

I have a scar from having a fibroadenoma removed too, so I'm hoping that BF'ing will help prevent cancer or other growths.
