Have a query for the herbal geniuses of the group

My neice has AWFUL body odour, despite adequate personal hygiene and the use of industrial strength deoderant. She doesn't perspire excessively and has a pretty healthy diet for the average teenager, with not much take away or red meat and lots pasta and fruit and vegetables.

Her medical history includes have a large part of her small bowel removed when she was born - (she was 8 weeks premature and they often suffer from parts of their bowel dying as a consequence of this) but since she was discharged at 3 months has never had to go back to hospital for further treatment.

She is very sensitive about this issue as you can imagine, and I have to say that smell is so offensive that at times i gag - (and as a nurse I have a very strong nose!)

I was wondering if any one knew of any herbal combination that could help detox her and/or decrease the odour?

thanks for yr help
blessings
Scarlett

Does it also increase near her time of month? I have a similar problem and when I can afford it use baby wipes to freshen up and put on new deoderant.

Has she talked to a doctor yet about this problem? I just want to double check a few things first. There are herbal things that she can try. Cleavers and sage are a couple off the top of my head. I'll check & post a list later tonight. But under the circumstances you described, I can recomend some herbs to look into. But I would suggest seeing a certified herbalist first...in case there are other medical reasons.

Yes she has been to Dr's and they no idea what the problem is
she is slightly more odourous immediately pre and 1st 2 days of her period but she stinks at other times as well

Herbalists are few and far where she lives Wildchild unfortunately, and the few that we do know of that are around blame EVERYTHING on yeast and put people on yeast free diets - I agree that somethings are caused by yeast problems but not everything!

thanks again for yr help

Sorry it took me a while to get back to you. Here's something that I found interesting. It's a bit unconventional, though.

Take a turnip and pulverize it in a blender or food processor. Squeeze out the juice and save that. Rub 1 tsp of the juice under each arm. I've never tried it but someone told this to me & she has good success with it. She said it doesn't prevent you from sweating but it controls the body odors.

Ok, here's a few more things that isn't quite so strange. :D

Cider vinegar is very antiseptic and deodorizing. Baking soda and cornstarch will help absorb body odor. For herbs, try eucalyptus, sage, corriander, and cleavers. These herbs can be infused in the vinegar & applied under the arms. After the vinegar dries, a dusting of cornstarch and baking soda can be used.

I'm not sure how well these would work for your neice but it might be worth a try. I'll keep digging and see what else I can come up with.

Cool now I have something new to try. Thank you Wildchild. If this works I might not be so leary of leaving my house! :)

If you try the turnip thing, let me know how it worked. :)

I have been using something in my tub for about a week and my hubbie said it is reducing the scent and that I wasn't imagining it! Karma Sutra powder Treasures from the sea. I have been sprinkling some in my bathwater. I thought I was not as bad as I was before but I wasn't sure so I asked him and he said it was helping. He said it has been helping quite a bit! I am so happy. I am going to test the turnip thing soon too maybe with all that I am doing I can get it under control. Also I use Old Spice High Endurance soap that helps too. :)

Did anyone mention bathing in baking soda to her? It is a natural deod. and it neutralizes. I know I read something else about this somewhere....I will try to remember where and what. Oh, throw about an eighth of a cup of soda in the bath just warm water too not hot.

So far that one hasn't forked for me in the tub or under the arms. :( Each of us are different though so maybe that would be a good solution. There are also natural crystal deodorents that sometimes work.

I was running through a website reading up on some stuff and I came across this section at http://earthnotes.tripod.com/ckbk_b.htm
It has a suggestion under body odour involving zinc.
