OK guys, i have a very serious request here...

a co-worker of mine has been in the hospital for over a week now with hiccups, sounds funny, yes, but he hasn't eaten on over 2 weeks and has lost over 25 lbs. the thing is, he is a really amazing friend of mine, and his birthday is today as well... :(
I didn't know he was still in the hospital till right now, we were told he was on vacation.

So if you could please send out your thoughts and energy to Dave and his wife and child while they deal with this.

thanks.

Positive energy is on the way. I am sure the Docs at the hospital have thought of it, but chronic hiccups is usually a sign of some sort of heart condition. I can't remember off the top of my head, just that in nursing school they mentioned it. Apparantly folks who don't have access to hospitals have relatives that they will swear died of the hiccups....the heart thing. He should be fine though in the hospital getting treatment. Will keep them in my thoughts. Oh and happy birthday to you both.

*nods in agreement with Semele*

I get really bad hiccups occasionally, but they (luckily) don't last for more than a couple of minutes. I can't imagine a week straight! :(

My best thoughts and wishes for him, Shnen!

I saw a piece on the local news in Toronto a while back about a Toronto area guy who had hiccups nonstop for over two years! No one could do anything for him, and needless to say his life was pretty disrupted by the constant interruptions. He hadn't been able to get a proper night's sleep in all that time because of it.

He was on the news because they hoped someone might be able to suggest a way to get the hiccups to stop. All the doctors he'd seen hadn't been able to help him.

Hopefully, the friend who is in the hospital with this problem has more luck than the guy on the news. My wishes are with him, his family, and friends.

Just a comment:

If he was in the US, think about the medical bills that would be piling up. And if he was one of the MANY citizens who don't have even sufficient health insurance, Canada and its subsidized health care system would look like a paradise.

(I'm a Canadian, by the way.)

I hope his hiccups clear up soon.

OK, he is still in the hospital, but they have him on meds now so he can keep food down! They are still keeping him in there, and they still have no clue what it is...

but it is a step in the right direction :), he has a long road to recovery and the guys say he is very frustrated... :(

thank you all for your thoughts and prayers... and please remember him as he recovers...

I will keep you all updated. :)

the most important first.., shnen, good luck and wishes for your friend, chronic hiccups may sound funny but the reality isn't.

as to the u.s. health system vs. the canadian system, frankly they both have faults and i've seen no one so far with any solution based on the reality that somehow the worker (doctors, nurses, etc.) is worthy of his/her hire. the first thing you hear of when the system, either one, is in trouble is staff and pay cuts, then service cutbacks. meanwhile the administrators somehow never seem to be affected by those cuts, and while staff, pay rates and services are being cut the front office suits are out hustling for a new wing and a million or two dollars worth of new gadgets. meanwhile the "hmo"s are doing their dammdest to cut costs and "maximise profits" using the bean counters to second guess doctors diagnoses and ducking out on anything expensive and long term. ottawa has its own little thing going, they simply refuse to believe that there is a limit to how much they can screw out of the canadian taxpayer but much of the above describing the u.s. system applies there too. what we have doesn't work, what canada has doesn't work either and hillary is no help, she's clueless, what she was proposing in that secret conclave of hers back when her husband slithered into office would have combined the worst of both systems. anybody got any ideas that don't somehow involve more government or big business bureaucratic parasites?
