Just something I was curious to get other peoples opinions about. I've read that many people believe that to bind your hair in anyway during ritual, binds you power. You should always leave your hair down. I myself have been taught to take your hair down before any energy workings. I was wondering if 1)anyone knows the origins or reasons for this and 2)does it matter to you personally?

I believe there was also a belief that pregnant women in labour should have no bound things about them, not their hair or anything, because being unbound symbolically helps the womb 'unbind' so the baby can get through.
I think it's mostly a symbolism thing. If something about you is bound it symbolically binds other things. :)
Personally I never thought about it.

Personally, having my hair down during a ritual is just more comfortable for me.

I have long, thick hair, practically speaking, sometimes up is better.
I have been known to offer an occassional lock of hair up in sacrifice to the Gods.

...while on the subject of hair, there may be somethin' to that Sampson story... when I get my hair cut, I usually feel ill afterward... the longer my hair is before it's cut, the worse I feel... weird, but true... :woah: :ahhhh: :eyebrow:

I would agree with you there - I finally got my hair really long again after cutting it all off.
I find the Samson story another piece of irony, as so many conservative Christians find long hair on men morally unacceptable.

It's just a feeling or instinct, but I like to have my hair loose during magickal work. If it happens to be bound in some way, it bothers me, and I tend to be distracted by that. So I've learned to keep my hair loose during those times. I don't really know why, but I think it might have something to do with freeing the energy within my body. When I'm doing some sort of mundane work, such as cleaning house, it's just the opposite and it bugs me if my hair's down.

My hair is not that long anymore but I find it gets in the way. I prefer to have it loosely tied back when I'm doing any magical workings.

My hair is long enough for me to be distracted by it if it's loose, so I always have it tied back when I'm doing any workings.

I have long thick hair, and whenever i get it cut (which isn't very often) , i can never put it up without getting a headache. and i can never figure out why that is..

I remember that, when I was little, I used to think that if I got my hair cut short, I'd become stupid :D. Well, my hair's still long, and I'm not going to chance cutting it short. :D
I don't usually tie it back for rituals but I worry that it could catch on fire off a candle when it's down.

I have this really long, thick, curly hair ( and i hate it btw! sorry, had to get that out! :D) and I'm always worried it'll catch on fire, or that it'll distract me, so i usually wear it in a low, loose ponytail or up. Tho, I do sometimes leave it down...

I usually wear my hair in a pony tail out of habit. But times when I would let it down during ritual, I felt more energy flow through me. My hair is long and thick in the back.

Try cat hair!! :ugh:  One of mine always has to get into the candles, and she's the fuzziest of the bunch, I'm shocked she's never gone up entirely!
Me...*shrugs*....I'll do both, and don't really notice a difference. To me it's a matter of the power being inside you all ready, and things of that magnitude aren't impacted by something like a piece of elastic around your hair.

In Appalachian culture a sick person should have their hair cut to conserve their life force. In the Bible weren't prostitutes marked by short hair? And some people believe that braiding ones hair harnesses it's power.
Me? I've had short hair a long time, it was once to my butt. I'm tired of dealing with Harpo every morning and I want to see if there's a difference power-wise. It's just now reached ear length and I can tell a difference. It may be because I'm growing spiritually anyway.
I have never gotten a good haircut, ok maybe once or twice, but although I'm usually groaning over the cut I feel incredibly free with a bare neck. So I have no clue...... :D

. . . and do you feel it affects you magically or spiritually?

I used to have somewhat long hair and never put it back. That was really distracting in ritual since I was always afraid of igniting it (which thankfully never happened), but other than that it was no different when it was past my shoulders or shaved off completely.

I put mine in pigtails (which is the way I usually wear it) so they don’t catch on fire. I have a big fear of that. My mom has a friend who got all her hair ripped off by a chainsaw and I’ve seen how fast hair can burn so I’m very paranoid. :woah:

i braid my hair until i hav enough energy raised to send towards my purpose. then i unbind to let the energy loose so it's more "concentrated". that is, by my way of thinking.

As many have heard me complain about, I had my waist length hair cut VERY short (as in Halle Berry short) this summer as the heat was just getting to me. For the record, I have not noticed ANY changes in my magick. Before I cut it I always wore it back anytime I did anything around candles, whether for pleasure or magick. When I was very young (8 or so) I caught my hair on fire. They got it put out quickly but.... I learned to be very very careful.
Just my 2 cents from the peanut gallery!!
