View Full Version : So I'm thinking of starting to make and sell magical-type candles and soaps...

I've got tons of list of correspondences for oils and herbs that would actually make some awesome candles and soaps. I've even got some specific recipes for some amazing soaps that do wonders for the spirit, and also for ritual preparation.

So, what I'm wondering is if there are any recommendations for making candles and soaps. I've tried my hand at it a bit before, but I want to great expand, and perhaps begin selling them. Any particular brands of candle and soap base that are better than others? I already know what brands of oils I prefer, after much experimentation to find quality oils that are consistent and won't break the bank (though Neroli, no matter WHAT the brand is expensive! And if it's not expensive, it's probably not real!)

What kind of soaps are you considering trying to make, melt and pour or processed? I make cold process soaps, and also many bath products, and have lots of nice links!

What type of candles are you thinking of creating? I did a huge candle making project for my art project in high school and there is a lot of options out there.

For soaps, I'm not entirely certain. I'm thinking of starting with melt-and-pour, just to start experimenting with scent and ingredient blends. They'll have essential oils, herbs, and stones/crystals in them.

For candles, they are going to be soy candles scented with essential oils, and containing various herbs for whatever purpose they are to be dedicated to.

Some of the purposes I'm considering:

Room purification - Sage is, of course, a great purifier, but there are a lot of other scents that can be blended with sage to enhance and mellow the smell.
Cleansing
Personal cleansing
Ritual dedication
Love
Lust (hey, what better candle to put in the bedroom! Or use with your honey in the shower :D Cardamom and Dragon's Blood)
Prosperity/money ('cuz who can't use more of that)
And perhaps offering specific and custom blends to suit a particular person's needs.

I used to have a little soap business... I ended up doing a lot of specialty soaps.. basically 'bespoke blends" i asked a minimum $20 dollar order and i would make pretty much anything the client could dream up, then i would make double the batch and sell on the rest through my normal markets.... ended up with a huge list of varieties...magical, skin-type specific, use specific....

happy to share any ideas with you, just pm me.

Be sure the essential oils you use are tested for the type of soap, they can seize the soap and ruin it. I haven't had it happen YET, but I am sure I will eventually!!!

I don't really have a favorite soy wax because I've used one kind (Golden Brands Container Soy GW464).
Some soy candle links that maybe helpful? (these are the ones I used and still continue to use)

OOOOHHH!!
When you're ready to start making your stuff. On ebay there are some molds- like a goddess mold and several others.
There is a coven about 3 hours south of me that makes soaps and candles and uses the goddess molds and several others- pentagrams, stars, all kinds of stuff.

and when you get some made up- i'd love to buy some- i by far prefer to buy home-made/hand-made stuff!! (and i love soap and candles candles candles!!)

good luck!
and i like the idea Tanya had- 20$ order - pretty much anything a client can dream up- sounds very reasonable!

As a person who has made, sold and taught crafts for about 40 years the best piece of advice I can give is.....
Make sure your doing it for yourself FIRST! What I mean by this is don't think your going to make lots of money on this. Very few people do. Do it because it's something you want to do and is going to make you happy! Nothing wrong with selling extras or making things for other people, but do it because you want to. Most crafts take far more labor than most people are willing to pay for and often your lucky to make a little more than what it cost you to make it. Sure, there are exceptions and if it takes off, great!

Good Luck!

Agreed. I know I've got well over $1000 invested in candle and bath & body stuff (I lost count) and I'm not at a point that I'm willing to sell.

The Soap Goat sells a lot of cool molds. Rosemary and lavender mix well with sage for purification, IMO.
