View Full Version : 30+ years of RC conditioning, and it's come to this!

Hi everyone. I'm Becky, and I've made ~5 posts now, so I figure I might as well introduce myself. I'm new to Paganism, so I don't have a defined path yet. But I do have some core beliefs -- such as in the sanctity of nature and the interconnectedness of all things.

Because I was raised Roman Catholic and a bunch of my friends in college were Christians of the fire and brimstone variety, I grew up with the idea of there being only one god and that god being male. So I find the idea of other gods and goddesses both liberating and inspiring. (Now if only I can actually believe in them and undo 30+ years of RC conditioning... )

I've also begun to explore the Celtic pantheon and Anglo-Saxon Paganism, and would like to learn about Stregoneria, since these were the religions of my ancestors. But I've found myself drawn to certain goddesses in other pantheons as well -- such as Athena and Oshun (an African goddess who's associated with parrots).

Let's see, other interests. I like to watch and play hockey. But I'm very much an introvert. I also love animals (especially cats, birds, and horses), nature, reading (both fiction and non-fiction), listening to metal, and looking at catalogs from the 70s and 80s and making fun of the way things looked back then. But my favorite thing to do is write fiction stories -- just for fun.

Some of this probably sounds familiar to those of you who read my intro post in the "newbies" thread. That's because I copied and pasted. *blush What can I say, I'm lazy and it's almost 11 p.m. on a weeknight.

Anyway, this looks like a cool place, and I hope to meet some of you soon. :) (Now off to bed... )

I am on a mission to convince the world the Dallas Stars are the greatest hockey team ever.... one NHL game at a time. (on the PS2 that is )

Welcome to the fold, you sound very interesting. I had a RC upbringing (albiet much shorter) and there are some values and beliefs that you may find that you still want to hang on to. Hope you enjoy the change and all that is on offer to you - I reccomend going through the newbie programmes on offer to get up to speed with pagan options availible, but there is no rush and nothing to enforce on you. You are the one that chooses the dirrection and pace of spiritual growth, get used to it! Emjoy it!

Thanks for the warm welcomes, everyone. :) I'm glad it's not too late to de-condition myself. ;) As Against The Tide was saying, there are still some beliefs from Christianity I hold on to -- like putting other people first. Well, I try to anyway, haha. But then there are other things about Christianity, at least for me, that have just got to go! I love to learn, so I'm looking forward to exploring the various Pagan paths.

Glowy, I root for my home team, the San Jose Sharks. But the Blackhawks are cool, too. They were my dad's favorite team when he was a kid because he thought they had such cool jerseys. I have some co-workers out in Chicago, and one of them is talking about us going to a Blackhawks game. I've never been to one of their home games, so I'm hoping we get to go.

Brigid Rowan, actually I got my user name from the book "Peace-Weavers & Shield-Maidens: Women in Early English Society" by Kathleen Herbert. AEthelflaed was this kick-ass English war-leader around the turn of the 10th century. I took her name because she inspired me -- even though I can only dream about being as cool as she was. :)

Might as well ask a newbie question while I'm at it. My little user thingie at the top shows I have a karma point. How do I know who gave it to me so I know who to thank?

Go to your user CP and scroll down to the chart marked "Latest Karma Touches". There will be a little colored square, the name of the thread where you received your points, the date the points were given, the username of whoever gave it to you, and a space for comments. :)

Thanks for answering my n00B question. Actually, I finally figured out the whole karma thing yesterday. (Yes, it really did take me that long. :foh:)

Welcome! This is a good site to learn.
When the guilt hits you between the eyes, and it will because of your conditioning, feel free to discuss it. There are a lot of us to commiserate with you.
Blessings.

you're welcome, and i'm too embarassed to admit how long it took me to figure out that the little link on amazon.com that says, "if you're not (name) click here" is the same thing as a logoff! _inabox_
