View Full Version : Dipaer rash from food?

Alessa has been really gassy lately and I attributed it to the dairy I had over the weekend (Friday/Saturday). I don't usually eat dairy while nursing because Robert had a sensitivity to it as an infant (not an allergy--he has no problem with it now) and allergies run in my family, but I wasn't thinking and had some. Anyway, I know it can take a few days to two weeks to get out of their system so it can be causing some lingering issues even though I'm no longer eating it. But can it cause a diaper rash? Alessa has a diaper rash that hasn't been going away no matter what we've done. I suppose there's a small chance that it could be yeast, as it's shiny and red and is bumpy now, but it doesn't look quite as bad as it did yesterday so it might be starting to get better finally. Also, I have no signs of thrush and she doesn't either.
I'm debating whether I should call her doctor and have it looked at or if I should give it a few more days to clear up.

I would buy a tube of Nystatin anyway - it costs $3, you can get it from a pharmacist, and it can't hurt. You don't need a Dr for that. That said, I've heard that some babies get a diaper rash from the wrong foods, but that's when they're on solids, not sure if it could come through the breastmilk too.

I am going through the same thing right now, but i think it got started because Connor was put on heavy antibiotics when in the Hospital after his birth. It's getting worse though it does not look like thrush. Ive illiminated milk but have slipped up a few times.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking nystatin, call your doctor. (this part of the warning makes me think it might not be good for babies)

When Cameron had a yeast rash the doctor told me to buy him this yeast cream that's for athlete's foot....it's called Canesten. Apparently (according to the tube) it's Canada's #1 antifungal cream. Heh. Anyway, when that didn't totally make it go away, he told me to pair it with a mild hydrocortisone (0.5%) cream...Claritin makes the one I bought. It went away almost immediately after that.
Go ahead and ask the doctor about it, if the rash won't go away after 3 days. That's what they're there for. :)

I have done the nystatin, hydrocortisone cream pairing with good results as well. I dont like using it, but in extreme cases, its useful to know about.
I am thinking this sounds like yeast rather than allergies, but I dont have a lot of experience with allergies either.

Thanks for mentioning the hydrocortisone cream. That wasn't mentioned to us and I am keeping it in mind if we have another really sore yeasty bum.

Thanks, everyone. :) I have some hydrocortisone cream already because f Robert's eczema. I'll go pick up some Nystatin and see if it helps.

sounds like she may have an allergy, have you introduced any new foods to her or any formula or medicine?

Breast Milk has different components, of course, than cow or goat milk. Goat milk is often tolerated better than cows milk. It ALSO has different sugars, as you probably well know. Sugar feeds yeast. So, yes, you probably have that problem, bless you and your little sweetie.
So, now you and the other Moms can compare notes, find the right cream, and maybe leave the little darling on a lined pallet naked to play for awhile to give the little butt a chance to get dry before you put the cream on.
I think I have said that once already today.
Blessings to all the new Moms!

I just remembered what I used to put on my babies when they got diaper rash - breastmilk! No kidding....I rarely had to use any other kind of cream. Its worth a shot anyway - free and available.

Indeed. It's funny you mention that because I put breastmilk on it yesterday morning when it looked painful. I don't know if it was that or something else, but it's mostly gone this morning. :) My bigger problems now are that she projectile vomited last night, spit up nothing but clear liquid the night before, and her poops started turning green late yesterday afternoon and haven't turned back to their normal mustard yellow color yet.
I have a call into her doctor. They should call me back within the hour so we'll see if she needs to go back in.

Aw poor kid.
Y'know it amazes me how sensitive their little tummies are. I mean, it's obvious they would be more sensitive then grown-ups, but it's like they're born really immature especially in that area.

That gets me too, especially when you think about how often and how much they have to eat. They eat a much larger volume of food for their body weight than we do. You would think that Nature would make their digestive systems mature enough to handle it.

Exactly. It just doesn't seem fair to me. Even when I had mine exclusively on breastmilk his digestive system caused hell. What can ya do?

I don't know. My poor baby. It just breaks my heart to see her in pain and suffering like this. I'm afraid that there might not be anything to be done but to wait it out. :(

:( It's the worst thing ever when you can't do anything about it. No one told me that was a part of motherhood.

Me either. That helpless feeling is the worst thing EVER.

The green poop makes me think its a intestinal virus. At least you can keep nursing her through it.

True. I just hope it's not an issue of her not nursing enough now because she's uncomfortable so she's not getting enough hindmilk anymore.

Its better that way though, so her stomach isnt working so hard to digest the fattier milk. Plus, she is already getting the antibodies in the milk to whatever the virus is since your far more mature immune system would be making them to protect you, so she will likely recover very quickly. :)

That's something I hadn't though of. :)
