Tarot creation?

Any advice on creating your own Tarot..? There's a project for the Illustration seniors at my school called the Ely's, and for mine, I'm going to begin my own Tarot designs, and was wondering if anyone could toss some advice my way on symbolism, etc. I know it's faraway but I want to at least get the thoughts moving first. Oh, and the theme's going to be a kind-of mystical-cyberpunk deal.

Are you doing a complete deck or just a couple cards? There's a book called "Tarot Companion" that has a section about symbolism. Take into account the colors you use too. Look at the Rider-Waite deck and look at everything in the picture, as yourself why it is there....because it's there for a reason. That deck was well thought out. :D In the end though, it is your deck...so as long as you can see the symbolism, that's all that matters. :D

My suggestion is to find out what the theme to a particular card is such as " The _____ card is all about _____" and them coming up with your own symbolism from that point, without the interference of someone else's ideas or what is considered 'traditional' hanging over you. When you are finished you might be surprised how close you came to the actual idea! After all- truth is universal!
