So, I posted about my athame in my thread about the apartment...
This is the blade I felt drawn to and when I picked it up it felt like it belonged with me...
Tonight, I ran it through the smoke from some sage while I constantly thought "I remove the negative energies and influences from you"....

does that cleanse it? Or do I need to do more?

That should be fine. If you work with it for the first time and it feels funny or "off", I would stab the hilt into the earth (a potted plant, if you don't have access a backyard) and leave it there overnight and that should do 'er.

Try this exercise. Sit down in your favorite meditation pose with your athame. If you keep a sharp edge on it, you can keep it in its sheath, as long as it's made of natural materials. Now, send energy out your dominate hand (usually your writing hand), through your athame, and back into your receptive hand. Pay attention to how it feels. If it feels slimy, oily, you get the impression that you should clean yourself, or something else that indicates it's negative, then you know it needs to be cleansed again.

what you did will work just fine. it's the intent that counts.

Not at all. Magic is real, and therefore sometimes you try something and fail. It's like basketball. I'm not the most coordinated of individuals, and no matter how hard I want it, I'm not going to be able to hit a half-court shot on my first try. Of course, you'll never make it without intent, but intent without facility doesn't guarantee results. That's why we need error checking mechanisms.
